    hi,
i have just done my first divx to svcd conversion, it took 4 hours in total, is that a good time or is that slow? the original divx was 1hour 50 mins long. i have a few questions about the process.

    1. i used cce to encode it, and that was the bulk of the time taken, during the encoding. i have tmpgenc installed so i wondered if i would be better off selecting that as the encoder next time as also the cce has produced a logo in the bottom right of the resulting mpegs which is not too intrusive but i would rather not have it there at all. so will i get a logo like that if i select tmpgenc as my encoder?

    2. the resulting mpegs when played on my tv are tall and as such when i set my tv to 16.9 ratio it plays them the way they should look. so i wondered if there is a setting in dvd2svcd that i had not set before the process started? i have looked at the programs options but i cant see anything about 16.9 or 4.3 ratios but perhaps i have overlooked something here?
if anybody can offer me any help at all i would be grateful being such a newb at conversion, it gets a bit complicated at times!

  2. Check the CONVERSION tab on DVD2SVCD and look at the ASPECT RATIO options. It may help.

Also -- I don't know what VIDEO ENCODING MODE you are using, CBR, Multi-pass, and if Multi-pass, how many passes, etc.) so can't really say whether the time is good or not. Does not seem out of line for your hardware.

Have you tried performing a One Pass VBR (OPV) using D2SRoba? If you have not give it a try. It produces quality rivaling 3-pass VBR and takes a fraction of the time. D2SRoba basically generates a script that executes some pretty complex algorithms to calaculate CQ value and Bitrate.

    Here's a link --

** With an AMD processor at 2.3GHZ I can encode a full length 1-1/2 hour movie in approx 100 minutes. The entire process from ripping, encoding, to ISO image creation takes about 120-130 minutes.

thanx for the tips. i have checked the conversion tab and lo and behold there are the aspect ratio settings, lol, i guess i was just looking too hard, i tend to do that when things appear complicated to me.
anyway, the encoder setting i used was the default setting multi pass vbr, so i will try out the single pass setting you mentioned and see how that goes too. its always good to experiment isnt it. i dont know what you mean by "D2SRoba" what is that?
can i ask do you use the cce encoder? if so do you get that logo i the right hand corner? or do you use the tmpgenc encoder? i would quite like to get that cce logo off my mpegs. thanks for the link as well, i will go check it out.

If you are encoding wide screen divx then set the aspect ratio to 16:9(borders added, encoded as 4:3),this will give you the proper screen ratio on these types of avi,if you switch to tmpgenc the encoding will be somewhat slower, you can speed it up by setting the rate control mode to constant bitrate(cbr).the only thing is then you want to keep your bitrate to at least 2000k,you can set the rate control to 2 pass variable but that will be twice the time.D2SRoba is used with cce so you will still have the logo.

  5. I provided a link to D2SRoba. D/L and give it a try. Don't set the encoder to Single Pass, let the D2SRoba utility set the Video Encoding mode for you. You can, however, make the other changes in DVD2SVCD as required. You'll be very satisfied!!

I do use CCE w/ DVD2SVCD. I currently use v2.66 and have used CCE 2.50 -- no real difference as far as I can tell, other than I did not need to apply the AMD CRC patch to 2.66. If you are using an EVAL version of CCE you will get a CCE logo. You will need to acquire a full copy in order to not have the logo.

BTW -- D2SRoba 2.7rc2 can be used with TMPGEnc as well as CCE. Unfortunately it is not available for download as 3.X is the current version and had TMPGEnc support removed. I use it for VCD and for tempermental files that so not behave with CCE and it works fine. If needed, let me know via PM and I'll e-mail it.

  6. If you do not want the logo try out TMPGEnc using CQ as your rate control mode with motion search on high. It's a one pass VBR that is very good. chek it out. I'd be interested to hear what kind of results you get.
