  1. I just tried capturing a 22 year vhs tape from my sons first birthday. Two problems to begin with ... the video plays and jumps and plays and jumps and plays and jumps .... and it's way too dark. What is it that I need to do to try and make it better. I'm thinking about getting a Datavideo TBC-1000 .... will that take care of the jumping problem? Then how to I go about restoring the image quality ... getting it lighter? Thanks ... MACKY

Yes, the TBC should take care of the jumping, provided it is caused by the source signal. If you are capturing with Virtual Dub there is bright contrast filter you can adjust the video to make it lighter.

  4. I am using an ATI All-In-Wonder 9000 Pro Video Capture Card. My VCR is a Panasonic PV-V4611 (nothing really spiffY). I guess it makes sense to go for the TBC-1000 as a starting point. Can't do much more if I can't get the jumping out.

Is there anything I can do with the AIW to fix up the video. Or will the plan be to capture to MPEG (or AVI) and then use software to do what I can? What software should I start reading up on?

  5. The TBC will make a huge improvement, and I think a better VCR might also. It depends on how much you need the quality improved, how important it is, how much you plan to use the equipment you invest in, and how much you're willing to spend. If you buy a new VCR, you might try one with TBC built in and see if that does the trick. If not, you may have to then go with a standalone TBC. Lordsmurf has some good articles on improving video capture from VHS.
