Just want to know if this is possible or practical. I do live productions and do not have space to hook up a PC so would like to just record real time from a video mixer digital output to an external DVD drive. I would then take the DVD to a PC for editing. Any input on this idea?

It would work if you are talking about using a "Stand Alone" DVD Recorder or Hard-Disk recorder...We do that all the time with our video camera systems and capture to Panasonic DMR-E100H Recorders from mixers. Most recorders will accept all types of inputs except macrovision encoded sources...
