  1. The Lite-On 411s has a rip speed of 12X. I've heard that some drives have their speed locked to something low like 2.4X. Is this the case with the Lite-On 411s?

I think what yer referring to is its listed READ speed. RIP speed is determined by several factors, including software, HD issues, drive characteristics etc, so nobody can say "yeah...THAT drive will rip at THAT speed."

Typically if u have no ASPI issues, a decent processor, plenty of ram, plenty (more than 15gb) free defragged HD space, and a drive that reads at say...12x, you can reasonably expect rip speeds anywhere from 4x to 12x. However, having everything perfect is no guarantee that you'll rip faster than 1x or 2x.

Some DVD writers, and possibly some ROM drives are set by the manufacturer to read no faster than 2x when ripping. They do this to discourage folks like me and u from backing up DVD's. There are ways to get around this in many cases tho.

Sometimes a hacked firmware update will do it....or perhaps sumthin more secret-code-ish like with plextor writers. They are set default to read at around 2x, but I've heard that if u push and hold the eject button with it empty, then wait for the lights to flash and the tray to open, you can put in a DVD and it'll rip at a rate much closer to its rated read speed. That setting will work until u reboot, then u can do it again.

My Samsung combo cdrw-dvd rom drive from walmart rips starting at 4x...and works itself up to around 10-12x by the end of the DVD, so that might be a good choice for u. I think the price is comparable to most lite-ons. Good luck.

  3. If I were to buy a seperate DVD-ROM drive that was 16x would this solve the problem?

My 411s shows 6X-8X in DvdDecrypter. Takes about 20 minutes to rip a 9GB DVD.

If you'll re-read the paragraph beginning with the word *Typically* in my fairly thorough response to your initial question above, I think I pretty much answered that already.
