Well I decided to do some cleaning up this evening removing some programs and running a couple of cleanup programs. I did a re-start and the system failed to start up, so now I am running in safe mode but my major problem is that all of the text in Win XP is some wierd code I can't do anything the text on this page is all that is normal, I can't read a f*ckin thing. The problem may have come from a registry cleanup I did using System Mechanic but because I can't read the text I can't even try restoring anything. I would check in the control panel under languages but everything is in this wierd code.

Any help would be greatly appreciated,
    Thanks.

Well you won't believe how stupid I am but when I loaded the XP cd and tried to do a repair it asked me for my administrator password whidh I don't ever remember having to use one when I installed XP over a year ago. Even if I did I can't remember it and it is not one of my usual passwords.

I already tried restoring to the last known good state and half way through booting up it just reboots again and fails.

If I use the XP cd and do a new install will it go over the top of the last one or will I have to format the drive?

I could try and fumble around how it is now and copy all my important stuff over to my spare drive and re-build but that's just a pain in the ass.

    Any other ideas????????????

  5. Can't help you, but if you re-install xp you could leave the admin name \ password blank next time (Unless you are a safety freak!).

You can try installing over the old one, but 9 time out of 10 it leads to woe. I think its time for a little Flatten and Reinstall action.

  7. I did a install over with XP,(why ?, because I uninstalled a expired McAfee Privacy program)and after reboot, system would not go beyond clicking log-on Icon. Not knowing about clean install or the repair option at the time. It left some programs on my computer that were no longer useable. These folders were there, full of program contents, but they will not work until you take the program backup CD and re-write over the existing file. All programs I reinstalled over existing file work fine. The one I could not get to work was Microsoft Interactive Training that came installed on my Dell, but there was no backup disc for it. This one sits there on my hard drive taking up nearly 100MB. I keep hoping someone can tell me how to activate it. It is very helpful to a beginner. Foz

I got it sorted I ended up doing a repair, I could not do it off the boot up on CD because of the password issue but when I went to install XP a blue screen came up with a repair option again and I put in my XP disk and 20mins later I was back up and running like before like nothing happened!!

    Thanks for all your help!

    Hope that never happens again!
