  1. Please someone help me, i cant seem to burn a DVD+RW on my iMac 1Ghz.

    My drive model is,

    Manufacturer: SONY
    Model: SONY DVD RW DW-U10A
    Revision: A13b

I have tried a few cheap DVD+RW discs and also bought some TDK discs today but have had no luck with either iDVD, Disc Copy or Toast 6.

Someone please help me out here, is there a firmware update availabe?

  3. The iApps just fail to write to the disc and Toast 6 see's the disc as a CDRW

I haven't tried any DVD-RW media yet i understood that the Sony drive could write to + or -

Although after reading up a little there it seems that apple just enabled DVD+RW support with 10.3 (my current OS) However i also read that the Sony drive does support this but apple didn't enable it for there apps and that 3rd party apps should work?

There's also mention about the firmware, any idea anyone if there is a firmware update out there for this drive?

Yes, iDVD won't work with your Sony drive.

About Toast 6, are you sure you have that drive selected. The CD-RW drive it is showing may be your factory-installed drive. Click on the drive name at the bottom of the window to switch to your DVD drive.

Is there any way i can flash the drive or get a firmware update for it?

I have the Sony DW-U14A and had no problems writing to Maxell DVD+RW media with OS 10.2.8 or 10.3.2 using Toast 5.2.1 or 6.0.3. I've done video DVDs to test how they look on my DVD player and I've done a data disc filled with mp3s that mount and play fine with iTunes.

I'm at a loss to explain the troubles you're having. I mentioned the issue of selecting the correct drive because you said it showed up in Toast as CD-RW. Toast gets this information from the drive through Apple's drivers. It makes no sense that it isn't recognized properly. This makes me suspect a problem with your system file (time for DiskWarrior). When my new G4 iBook arrived it was confused about the Sony DVD drive nor would it burn with the internal drive. Reinstalling the system fixed the problem.

You might check the user comments for that drive at the CD/DVD database at xlr8yourmac.com.

  8. When i insert a cheap DVD+RW Toast see's the disc as a CD-R and when i try to write to the disc i get (THE DISC FAILED TO BE WRITTEN ERROR).

Although i bought some TDK DVD+RW discs today as i thought the cheap one was no good and Look Toast see's the disc as a CD-RW.

And look a different error when trying to burn with the TDK disc also.

It seems that this drive only supports DVD-R only? I have also posted the same topic on the macnn board.

  9. Your drive (SONY DVD RW DW-U10A) comes with some Apple G5 1.8Ghz SP and some iMac 20" Macs (and probably with other Mac models)...So it works for sure under Panther...Try to fix problem with DiskWarrior or to reinstall sys as Frobozz said...If nothing helps call Apple..Maybe something is wrong with the drive...

  10. I'll try DiscWarrior tomorrow and i hope it works?

Its just weird that some people say the drive supports the DVD+RW discs and that Apple crippled the firmware to support DVD-RW discs only.

I haven't had any problems at all writing to DVD-R discs, wish i had a DVD+R lying around so i can try this also !!

Silly me. I didn't realize this was an Apple OEM drive. In that case it's Apple's norm to use firmware that restricts the drive's capability. It can only burn the types of media that Apple System Profiler reports it can burn. Apple's info about the G5 superdrive only says it does DVD-R, no other DVD formats. Some people with restricted Pioneer drives have put them in a PC and updated their firmware to Pioneer specs. There is a possibility this voids AppleCare (at least for the drive), but possibly that could be an option for the Sony drive as well. Again, there's discussion of this at xlr8yourmac.com.

  12. I took the DVD+RW discs back to the store and got a refund. Popped along to the local computer store and tried to get some DVD-RW discs but they didn't have any, i'll pick these up later.

Just picked up 10 DVD-R discs for £10 and they burn perfectly at javascript:emoticon('')

  13. I would get that same message when I tried to use 4x-10x cd-rw disks with a 2x cd-rw burner.
