Check out this link. N.I.C.O.L.E. stands for "Nearly Intelligent Computer Operated Language Examiner." Essentially you chat with "her" just like you would a normal person. Over time she associates different phrases and combinations of words and has a "conversation" with you.

It is quite fun to play with. Be forewarned that the site has been up for over two years and some (most) of the responses are quite vulgar in nature. She was just recently played with by the goons over at Something Awful, so expect some interesting responses.

Weird! I remember a program called ELISA for the Mac. Not in the least bit intelligent. It pretended to be a psychiatrist. Then there was AZILE (ELIZA backwards) which was just pure evil.

I wonder if there will ever be a machine that can converse like a human and keep up to date with current events, and express an opinion about them. I suppose the opinion bit is asking a lot of a computer, but it'd be interesting.
