  1. I have a project coming up where I'll be capturing some video and converting it over to mpeg1. I'll be taking that movie and chopping it up, pulling requested scenes out.

What would you recommend for the job? I was thinking of using virtualdub, unless there is something better, faster and easier.

    thanks!!

The faster one would probably be TMPGEnc Plus' Merge & Cut function, as it does not re-encode the video.
    Hello.

If you are capturing to avi, and then converting to mpeg-1, use virtualdub to crop the avi before encoding to mpeg.

  4. after some extensive research, i've discovered that pinnacle studio 8 does a fantastic job. To give you an idea of how big of an editting job I'm doing, I've got a 2 hour 8mm tape. I'm creating 4 seperate movies from that 2 hour tape. Each movie consists of over 20 small cuts, running one after the other. The cuts vary in length from 5-30 seconds with no transistions between the clips.

I was able to chop down a 2 hour movie into a 12 minute movie containing over 35-40 clips in less then 15 minutes using pinnacle and it worked perfect, not bad

A buddy of mine just purchased pinnacle studio 9. Curious if it's going to work striaght out of the box or if it'll require 4 or 5 updates before it's stable.

Man. For massive editing like that, I would have grabbed Virtual Dub mod (VDub), TMPGEnc Plus, AviSynth, a notepad, and a pencil. Loaded the original video into VDub, jotted down what clips I needed where according to frames (that VDub cursor moves like there is no tomorrow). Grabbed AviSynth and made a script using the VDub data, made VDub run it, frameserved to TMPGEnc, and called it a day!
    Hello.

  6. pinnacle has a toolbox that I didnt even know existed before.

I simply dragged the whole movie down to the timeline and then typed in the requested start/stop times. It was instant, with no lag at all. I did a clip today that had over 40 pieces to it. Since I am able to type on the numeric keypad, it took me less then ten minutes!
