Ok I am not a noob to burning, but this is something I have never seen answered.
I have 2 dvd players. One is a jvc xv555bk (3 disc) the other is a toshiba sd3900. I have a couple PAL movies.
No PAL will play in the JVC. It even flashed PAL on it's front display. The toshiba plays everything I throw at it. Pal and NTSC look perfect next to one another. My father, however, has an Apex (I don't remember the model) and though the PAL discs play, they look funny. I checked the settings and everything is setup fine. If it's widescreen (or letterbox or whatever you choose to call it) it is more noticable than fullscreen.
I was wondering why this is. Mainly is there an automatice PAL to NTSC converter in my toshiba? Does it convert at all or just has the ability to play all regions? Why, is my basic query! Why does my father's Apex not play the PAL disc's very well, but yet play them? And the jvc is 4 years old, and I have never found a region free hack for it, so i don't even know how well a PAL disc will look in it. (quick request: if anyone can find the region free hack for the jvc xv-m555 PLEASE pm me. I have been hunting for more than a year. Now it's just become a quest even though I don't need to find it!)

tsantsa,
What do they look like when they play? Also, are you trying to play an original DVD or a copied DVD/(S)VCD?

The PAL discs played on my toshiba look perfect next to their NTSC counterparts. My dads Apex stretches them funny. The PAL are both original and backup. The jvc will NOT play PAL, either original or backup.

Hi,
If your tv system over where you live is ntsc then maybe you dads player doesnt convert the pal DVD to Ntsc for play back on an Ntsc tv very well
or maybe you dads tv doesnt have multisystem support for both Pal and Ntsc.
That might be the problem I cant be certain as i live in pal zone and the ntsc image goes black and white and goes weird when played on a pal tv system only can view ntsc on my new tv or playing through a dvd player that converts it to pal to be viewed on the pal only tv.
Hope that might help?
Thanks

So, basically, if a dvd player will play both versions then it actively 'decodes' the content of the dvd? If it won't play the disc (like my jvc won't) then it can't decode properly?

Ive never used the jvc dvd player but ive read the user comments on it and the majority of comments says that model of jvc is total crap.
by what the capabilitys of that player it doesnt play anything but Original DVDs that are to that region and there is no known hack to make it region free.
Ive brought a real cheap dvd player but checked the dvd players list on dvdrhelp and user comments to see what its capabilitys are and brought it.
It plays everything i throw at it havnt thrown a dvdr disk at it yet but when i do it should play it.
Thanks
