Well, I've searched these forums and followed suggestions, but to no avail:
Problem: Authored DVD will not play on Malata N996 Player.
I have tried many of the DVD Authoring programs to check the *.ifo structure of my VOBs (either created by IFOEDIT, ULEAD 7, NERO EXPRESS, NERO RECORD, NERO 6.3 and the rest).
My Malata N996 will not recognize the disc (regardless of size 1Gb-4.3GB). However, my RCA will play the disc.
MEDIA - It's not the media, I can rip regular movie DVDs and re-author them on my DVD+RWs and THEY WILL PLAY on the Malata.
UDF - I've tried authoring with UDF, Physical Partition, 1.02 -and- my authored DVDs will not play on the Malata, yet still play on the RCA.
Again, just pulling movie VOBs ripped from movie DVDs onto the media will play fine on the Malata.
With my authored DVD files, I have made sure they were compliant by using DVDFab, Gear Pro, and IFOEdit and still they wont play on the Malata.
I have also, tried all bitrates from 2,000 - 7,999 to see if that was the problem and still no go.
I know this is a common problem posted here, but the difference I have is that even using DVDInfo and comparing my DVDs with ripped DVDs, the information is always displayed the same -> UDF, 1.02... etc etc
What the heck is going on here?
Thanks!!!!

did some quick searches on your player and dvdfab. Short answer is that the overall issue could be one or both of them.
My recommendation is to download dvdshrink and isoshrink (all freeware) and redo everything with these two tools and see if you have the same problem.
Your player has had reports of finicky issues, etc. and dvdfab has been reported as having playback problems on some dvd players. I am thinking the combination of the two could be what is causing the problem.
My results of dvdshrink and isoshrink have resulted in perfect playback on any and every dvd player I have tried it on. Some of them are considered to be pains in the rear to play burned media on.
Now after rereading your post, the suggestion to actually fix the problem that you are asking about is to try TMPGENC DVD Author. -
Thanks for the quick reply.
I indeed use DVDShrink last night to reauthor one of the home-made DVDs... and still to no avail.
It's just very confusing why a standard ripped DVD would work and not an authored-one (UDF,PhysP,1.02,Finalized).
Even tried using High-Compatibility mode in Nero 6.3.
I used TMPGENG to encode to MP2 + WAV and just use IFOEDIT to make compliant files out of them (VTS Sectors, and other IFOEDIT utils to make sure).
Not sure if TMPGENC DVD Author would do any difference, but will d/l and give it a shot. -

Ahhhh! Based on what you said it is likely that TMPGENC encoded it incorrectly. This may be user error OR it may be TMPGENC's error. I have read posts where TMPGENC goofs up (everything looks OK) and the resulting file does not play correctly. Something to do with dvd compatibility settings (checking or unchecking something. It will pass the other checks, but the dvd player chokes on it (because it is finicky). I believe it has something to do with the GOP settings.
Maybe someone else could add to this if their memory is better than mine. -
Well. the story doesn't end there. That's where I started. The last two discs I tried to do were done through ULEAD Video Studio 7.0. That program did everything from capture to burn!
When that didn't work, I pulled the VOBs,IFO,Bups it left on the hard drive and ran it through DVDSHRINK -> No Work, then the same with DVDFAB -> No Work and Gear -> No Work, then NERO EXPRESS -> No work.
I am very persistent, as you can tell!!
Also, I would like to add, the source of my captures are either NTSC interlace VHS or PAL VHS (yes, i can even capture really bad looking PAL tapes).
To reply to your post (thanks!). I have toyed with GOP settings based on LordSmurfs and Doom9 guides.
Could there possibly be anything encoded within movie VOBs that would not be encoded within home-authored ones???
Thanks ! -
Don't know if this helps but I have a DVD Player that doesn't like UDF on its own.
It will play ISO mode 1 8.3 no relaxation
OR
ISO/UDF
but never only UDF !
I use Nero 5.5.10.~ in DVD Video mode mostly but also WinOnCD6.0 ISO mode. -
Hmm.. Interesting. At this point, I'll try anything.
I did indeed do a UDF/ISO yesterday as well. I well try a pure ISO for fun to see.
Although, I know UDF 1.02 works with movie DVDs that I've reauthored. -
Well. Another authored-DVD attempted yesterday.
1) Good Thing, the Player recognized It (N996)
2) Bad Thing -> Wouldn't go beyond the menu (first time I ever created one)
Any more suggestions?
TIA! -
Just in case people are having similar problems. I'll answer myself here:
I finally got one to work using DVDSHRINK to reauthor the files (uncompressed) then ran it through IFOEDIT to create NEW IFO's and GET VTS SECTOR (just in case) then used NERO 6.3 (DVD-VIDEO creation template which creates it in ISO/UDF format).
I also unchecked almost everything in NERO. Not sure which of the above steps made it work with my standalone, but now I am
