I have a sony DCR-TRV33, and I wonder how do you know if your camera has pass through capability?.

Also how do you do taht, what kind of cables are required?. I assume a fW cable from the camcorder to the PC is required, but do you need a special cable from the analog source to the camera?

If you have some links, I'll apperciate the info.

    Thanks

i have the sony TRV22 and i has pass through as most minidv camcorders do these days.

you use the a/v cable that came with your camcorder then firewire to the computer. make sure no minidv tape is in the camcorder. turn camcorder to playback function and the vcr a/v will run through the camcorder to the computer.

    its pretty easy to do.

  3. The Sony DV camcorder tends to have a menu item called DV OUT, you need to enable it in order for it to take analog video/audio then send DV to the computer via Firewire.
After editing, if you want to save back to analog video tape (VHS) again, then use the same cable setup, disable DV OUT , hit RECORD on the VCR then play the edited movie from the PC. (I do this something to copy edited video to VHS tapes for relatives who want them)
Nice thing that it goes both way.

I use ulead dv 5, It came with my firewire card. I then use tmpgenc to convert and either Tmpgenc dvd author or DVD lab to create my dvd's.

For free DV 'capture' programs, try DVIO or WinDV, both in the 'Tools' section to the left.
