AVI -DVD conversion trouble

HI,
Please help, i have searched the forums and found nothing that helps me ( to be honest ive read that much i think i have confussed myself more)
i have a AVI here that i wish to convert to a dvd-r ( i have a Pioneer 105, and use orange bulkpac discs, with nero 5) i have tried to convert the avi using 'TMPGEncDVDAuthor' but i get the message "for DVD standard you can only use MPEG-1 VIDEO or MPEG-2 VIDEO" is there a way for me to put this on a dvd-r? as it is driving me nuts. again i apologise if the answer is simple or here somewhere on the forums , but i am unable to find it.

Tmpgenc dvd author only author dvds. You must first convert to dvd mpeg. www.dvdrhelp.com/convert

Or if you don't want to use several steps get an all in one tool like Ulead DVD Moviefactory.

I have just installed MOVIEFACTORY (forgot i had it) i tried but it says
"14cycle.OBUS.XViD-SEQUA.avis not accessable"
