Can't comment on Hi8 but the comparison between MiniDV and VHS is simple.
Watch a VHS video and then the same movie again in DVD quality.
    You'll get the picture, literally.
    There difference is immense.

The quality really is dependant on the camera but one of the things you can look for is the Horz-Res.

VHS is about 270 off the lens down to 235 off tape, depending on the camera.

Hi8 is around 400 Horz Lines of resolution.

MiniDV is around 525, the Sony DSR-PDX10 is TESTED at +530 in VideoMaker mag!!!!! But you have to watch out, some MiniDV cameras are only about 410 lines of Horz-Res which is about Hi8 quality!

I have just gone though the last two years of the VideoMaker mag to compare cameras. Wow, most of the miniDV cameras don't even hit 500 lines.

    Check them out at www.videomaker.com

If you look inside the cover of the mag. you will see the "password" to get to the articles. This month is "MPEG"

VideoMaker is a great resource to go with DVDRHelp.com

  6. mini-dv is a better format than hi-8 no questions whatsoever. there are countless reasons, but to put it simply mini dv is digital and hi-8 is not.

Hi8 is analog. You are probably thinking of Digital 8. It records digitally on to Hi8 tapes.
