  1. I run an Abit NF7 S for my mainboard. Its one of the few NForce 2 boards that have real-time INTERACTIVE Dolby Digi 5.1 encoding. What I'm looking to do is have Windows play back a .wav file upon boot that is 6 channels. I ripped the THX Logo off an Indiana Jones DVD w/ AC3 Tool and then made mp3 file into a wav file. But when I go to sound properties from the control panel, to set that wav file as my Start Windows sound, I get an error that it is in unrecognized format. Is there any codec I can install to correct that? I tried encoding the ac3 file into a 2 ch wav thinking the Nforce would "down-mix" it to 5.1 but that doesn't happen. Any ideas?

Can you play the WAV file by double clicking on it from Windows?

I just took the default XP Startup.wav file, loaded it in Creative Wave Studio, converted the (Audio : 0.0 B, 352 Kbps, 22050 Hz, 1 channels, MS PCM) file to (Audio : 750 KB, 1536 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, MS PCM) and Windows excepted the file and played it back ok. No problems with that stereo wav file.

Maybe something went wrong with your conversion. I don't know.

    Good luck.

I have that THX logo file and I'll try that now. Be right back.

Here's my conversion results for the ripped THX logo audio:
    Starting file:
    Audio : 406 KB, 256 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x55 = Mpeg-1 audio Layer 3 (MP3), Supported

    Converted file:
    Audio : 2.38 MB, 1536 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x1 = MS PCM, Supported

Loaded as startup file, excepted by windows xp, and played ok.

Used Creative Wave Studio for conversion.

    Good luck.

  4. Did a more realistic test this time.

    Input: Audio : 351 KB, 192 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x2000 = AC3 DVM, Supported

    Converted the audio with VirtualDub.
(VirtualDub needed the AC-3 ACM Decompressor installed to be able to do the conversion.)

    Output: Audio : 4.40 MB, 1536 Kbps, 48000 Hz, 2 channels, 0x1 = MS PCM, Supported

Tried as Windows Startup file and was excepted ok. Played ok.

Also tried the original AC-3 audio file and it too was excepted for Windows Startup file and it too played ok.

This AC3 file is straight off the DVD disk.

All I've got installed here is AC3Filter and AC-3 ACM Decompressor.

    Good luck.

  5. So I understand, are you running your PC w/ a 5.1 speaker setup? The whole thing I'm trying to accomplish is to get Windows to play it back upon startup IN 5.1 and NOT 2 Channel. The whole appeal of the THX logo is that the sound goes from the rears into the fronts. I'm gonna take a stab w/ those progs you mentioned.

It seems to me the files you say are playing back OK are in 2 channel only, whereas my goal is to keep 6 channels, which I don't think is possible.
