I've just donated blood for the first time, just half an hour ago and man do I feel proud of myself!
Anyone done it, or thinking about it?
    If you haven't, do it!
I'm not great with needles but I'm sure glad I did it.

Man I would donate but I am scared as shit of needles. Don't ask me why. Heights are no problem. Speed is a rush. Water is fun. I love the dark. Graveyards are peaceful. None of the normal phobias apply to me. Just that one.

Yeah I feel bad about not being able doing it. But I have a legitimate excuse as well. They don't want my blood due to my medical history. So at least I don't have to feel so incredibly guilty about being a chicken shit.

I was going to about three years ago. After waiting in line for about three hours, I gave up. I was nowhere near the front. And BTW, I don't really want to do it now that I found out that while I donate the blood for free, they sell it to people who need it.

Unfortunatly that's true,I hate to say it but I wish the medical community would kick a few dollars/euros to donors. As much as they charge for medical treatment they can afford $10USD per donation,I know it's run by the Red Cross or some other non-profit group but they could be reimbursed.
BTW..I hate needles too but if I need surgery I'm going to stockpile my own blood before hand.

I don't really mind donating my blood for free. It's that they sell it that makes me mad. Most people donate blood and think they're going to help someone's life, but the fact is that they may be doing more bad than good if that person can't afford the blood.

  9. Donated six units so far. I have O negative, which is the universal blood. It can be given to anybody regardless of their blood group, and it won't react. Very useful for accident victims. Sadly, only 6% of the population possess this blood type, and how many of them give it away?

In the UK, the National Blood Service collect the blood (and damn good at it they are too) and it's given away freely. You give blood to save lives, no strings attached.

I've been giving since I turned 17, which is the minimum age, and I am up for my seventh donation soon.

I only do it for the chocolate biscuits they give you!

  10. I'm way over the top with this. I used to donate plasma twice a week down by the housing projects on E street. Making some cash money on the side too. They even gave me a rabies shot so I could donate plasma with rabies anitbodies. That was $20 a visit.

After the euphoria (sp?) died down last night, and totally contradicting the advice I was given and not resting, I felt a little queasy last night, and had a bit of a headache but still worth it, I'll definetely do it again.
The British Red Cross don't sell it, it's only in the US they do that, right?
I was reading up before I went in to the donation area and apparently they do use some blood for research, but there was nothing about selling/profit.
Would put me off a little to know it was being sold to be honest.
There's such a push in the UK as far as there's supposed to be a shortage, so it's nice to know you're helping to save lifes (and those UK adverts; ..."do something amazing today, save a life", really make you want to do it.
I have my donation sticker on my shirt as I type, not long to the gold enamell badge

  17. When I was young use to donate 2-3 times per year. I lost count of what I donated. I thank God I never needed any back. It saves alot of lives whether you have to pay for it or get it for free. If I was still young I would still donate however I now I need all the energy I can muster and giving blood does take your energy away.

In some states, blood collection places sell blood to hospitals and the like. Some places pay you for your blood, while others don't. Usually the places that pay you to donate will sell the blood and some places that don't pay will also sell the blood.

And who does all the blood testing and separation - the collection services or the hospitals?

Some of my fraternity brothers back in college did this for beer money. Sad. Very sad. I never did that.

Never given to date, though most of my family does.

That depends on what state you live in. I might be mistaken, but there's no federal regulations on blood collection, as far as I know. If there is some kind of federal regulation, it's pretty laxed, since each state deals with blood collection and distribution in their own way.

Hawaii only has one organization that collects blood. As far as I know, they don't sell it and it's run by a non profit group. The Hawaii Blood Bank tests the blood themselves and we have one of the highest standards in the nation. However, I've heard of other states that don't have very good screening procedures. I guess it's gotten better, but it wasn't uncommon for HIV positive blood to be collected, screened, and still given to a recipient.

I would think that with all the liability and lawsuits these days, both the collection groups and medical facilities independently test the blood, before it's transfused.
