This list is really taking off. I want to start a webpage listing single layer DVDs as soon as possible. I have a lot of the web page made already but I'm still unsure on how to make a forum like this one or have a field where people can put the names of the DVDs along with other information. This isn't as important as creating the list but I'd also like to have a scan of the DVD covers to go along with movies.
I'm a huge Criterion Collection fan and I went through both the website and the little booklets they sent with the DVDs in 2001 and picked out all the ones that specially said it was single layer or if it was on the website does list it as being dual layer. This list includes.
The Lady Vanishes
Beauty and the Beast
Walkabout
Samurai I: Musashi Miyamoto
Samurai II: Duel at Ichijoji Temple
Samurai III: Duel at Ganryu Island
The Naked Kiss
Shock Corridor
Summertime
Alphaville
The Long Good Friday
Flesh for Frankenstein
Blood for Dracula
M
Great Expectations
Oliver Twist
Nanook of the North
Diabolique
Branded to Kill
Tokyo Drifter
Taste of Cherry
The Most Dangerous Game
Black Orheus
Yojimbo
Sanjuro
Autumn Sonata
The Orphic Trilogy (three discs, all single layer)
Cleo from 5 to 7
Vagabond
Brief Encounter
And God Created Woman
The Band Dick
Variety Lights
Good Morning Pygmalion
Sisters
The Blob
Fiend without a Face
Black Narcissus
All That Heaven Allows
Written on the Wind
Double Suicide
Spartacus (this I'm not sure about because it's a double disc set but nowhere does it say that it's dual layer discs)
Mona Lisa
M. Hulot's Holiday
Mon Ocle
Playtime
Rififi
Importance of Being Earnest, The
General Ili Amin Dada: A Self Portrait
George Washington
The Fireman's Ball
Loves of a Blonde
Closely Watched Trains
How to get ahead in advertising
I've noticed that a lot of foreign and silent films are single layer and only a couple different companies release most of them. Image is really into making single layer discs, Fox Lorber is the same (although their 400 Blows wasn't single layer), MPI Entertainment has some but they don't have a lot of DVD, and Anchor Bay has a lot of DVDs but only some of them are single layer I think.
Here's some other DVDs I've come across that are single layer:
Mothman Prophecies
Battleship Potemkin
Bicycle Thief
Chuck and Buck
Faces
Welcome to the Dollhouse (I'm hoping Happiness is too but I haven't checked yet)
sex, lies, and videotape
Draughtman's Contract (I think I lot of Peter Greenaway's films are single layer, except for the Cook, the Thief, his Wife, and her Lover)
I'm trying to go after huge disc sets now like the Twilight Zone DVDs and Monty Python DVDs. The Twilight Zone is released by Image which is known to just produce single layer DVDs so I really hope they are, that's 40+ discs of the Twilight Zone! Monty Python is A&E I think and I haven't confirmed it but they might be single layer too.
On the website I've been working on there is a FAQ page and even though the page hasn't been up at all making it impossible for questions to be asked, I answered some I just made up. I’m not going to list all the questions here but I will put the first and most important one. The first question is:
Why build a list of Single Layer DVDs?
1. The first reason to make a list like is to separate the superior DVDs from the substandard ones; the single layered discs being the substandard ones. The Superbit collection by Columbia Tristar uses the space that is usually taken up by multiple language tracks or other special features and uses that space to store a higher bit rate video file. DVDs are usually encoded at 4-5 Mbps, the Superbit DVD series has a bit rate average around 6-7 Mbps which results in a much better picture. Thing is, DVDs have the ability to be read up to 10 Mbps, that’s double the bit rate of most of the DVDs we buy today. DVD companies are not using the absolute best resources at their hands because they want to re-release the same DVD’s over and over with new transfers. I wonder if we’ll be seeing a “SuperDuper” Bit DVD in the future?
2. When we back up the DVDs we get the entire disc, including the special features. Most people back up their DVDs onto a computer, converting it into a file format that degrades the quality of the movie. Even if a DVD is ripped and converted to a SVCD, there is some loss in quality, you don’t have any special features, and the movie is on two or three CD-Rs. It also takes a really long time to convert DVDs to another file format.
3. To compile a list of DVDs that can be backed up on a General Purpose DVD-R or some other DVD format that can be played on a standalone DVD player. With DVD prices so high and the number of collectable /out of print DVDs out there, backing up the DVDs is the good way to watch the DVDs without scratching the originals.
4. When burning a DVD to a DVD-R you can Exercise the “time shift” method where you rent a DVD, back it up, and watch it when you have the time. With time shifting you can avoid late fees and watch the DVDs whenever it’s convenient for you to watch them.
5. The last reason is to persuade DVD Production companies to make better quality DVDs in a pacifist kind of way. They should not be releasing DVDs unless they are the absolute best quality possible. Time and time again DVD Productions companies have released a single layer disc only to release a dual layer version a little later. Not only are they manipulating the consumer but they are also disgracing the filmmaker by creating a bad transfer of their film, moving further away from what the filmmaker intended.
Some people are still holding off on buying a DVD player because they think that even dual layer discs aren’t good enough. DVDs do look great but they don’t compare to the original 35mm prints we see in the theaters or uncompressed DV.
Even though backing up DVDs that you own is not illegal I’m sure the DVD production companies won’t like the idea. The more popular DVD burners become the more reluctant the DVD companies will be to release single layered discs.
Although this seems a bit contradictory based on the content of this website, we will not be happy until DVD Company’s stop making single layered DVDs. In fact the day they stop making single layered DVD’s and come out with a better format than DVD, this site will be closed permanently. Until that day though, I will continue to quietly discourage DVD companies who make poor transfers of films that deserve much better. Of course when the newer format comes out with burners they’ll probably be able to fit several dual layer DVDs on one disc, but we’ll cross that bridge when we come to it.
----------------------
Another thing I wanted to say before I go is the price of DVD burners. I still have room to fit an internal drive in my computer so that's the only one I've been looking for and as far as I can see the pioneer dvr-104 (or dvr-a04) are the best. From what I've read, these drives are the same thing, only difference is the 104 is a bare drive meaning it doesn't come with software and stuff and it doesn't say pioneer on the front. The lowest I've seen the price is here for $238.00: http://store.yahoo.com/jazztechnology/piondv1xinei1.html . I've been tracking the price for a while now and it's been falling a dollar every other day. I called them and asked if they knew if a newer model is coming out, which would explain the gradual price drop, but they said they didn't know anything. I have a really bad feeling that once I buy the burner a newer one will come out. The only modifications on the new one would be higher burn speeds and compatibility with DVD+R and DVD+RW, which I think, are horrible formats because most DVD players won't play them but I'd still like the option of being able to burn them so I can conform to my PC friends.
This is a long post I hope it all gets on there. Thank you everybody for making this list what it is. Keep um’ coming dammit! -
A list of 7,268 single layer dvds ( http://www.geocities.com/singlelayerdvd/allsinglelayerdvds.txt )
Thanks to member Unleashed we have a very large list (7,268) of DVDs that are single layered. I opened up a geocities account so people can download the whole list because it's too big to fit on here. There are a lot of mistakes on the list. These are the ones I've noticed so far (DVDs that to my knowledge are not single layer):
The Alien Trilogy
American History X
Artificial Intelligence
Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me
Birds, The
Blair Witch Project, The
Bronx Tale, A
Detroit Rock City
Eisenstien: The Sound Years
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
Last Tango in Paris
Natural Born Killers
Nightmare Before Christmas
Passion of Joan of Arc, The
Pi
Picnic at Hanging Rock
Piano, The
Raging Bull
Rear Window
Rosemary's Baby
Run Lola Run
Saving Private Ryan
Seventh Seal, The
Stanley Kubrick Collection, The (with the exception of Dr. Strangelove)
Taxi Driver
Time Bandits (maybe they menat the non-Criterion one)
Tokyo Olympiad
Toxic Avenger, The
Trouble with Harry, The
Virgin Suicides, The
W.C. Fields 6 Short Films
Waking Life
Most of these I own, the others I've just seen on the back of their cases that they are not single layer. Don't get me wrong this list is impressive and I think I'll work off this but be warned there are some flaws in it. This list confirmed LOTS of dvds I suspected. Anbody that's been tracking this post, consider this is a major update.
The list can be found at this link in case you missed it up top: http://www.geocities.com/singlelayerdvd/allsinglelayerdvds.txt -
rudeboy, what about rental dvd's? many of them are single layer because they don't have extras, e.g. "behind enemy lines" and "from hell" on region 2.
-
Yeah I'm confused about that. I've heard a lot of people mention "rental dvds". Every dvd I've ever rented is the exact same one I'd get in a dvd store or something. Are rental dvds only a region 2 thing or is it that my area rental places just have the same ones as consumers buy. I think that's pretty stupid if rental stores are taking away the special features and different audio tracks on a dvd, I'm just glad I haven't seen anything like that yet.
-
yeah region 2 has a lot rental dvd's but the retail discs still get the all the usual extras. i think rental dvd's are good because behind enemy lines would have been a dual layer retail, but it was only a single layer rental so i could make a perfect backup copy! oh yeah like you said earlier companies seem to be getting smart and are hardly releasing any more single layers. rental jeepers creepers for example, is only about 84 minutes long but it's a dual layer!
-
That's cool that you're able to copy those rental DVDs but that doesn't make sense to me. Why would DVD companies want to release a bunch of DVDs that are no good after the retail ones come out? DVDs can be mass-produced faster than anything on the market so why would they spend the money to make crappy version. It sounds like they're asking for those discs to be backed up.
Another place that lists single layer DVDs is imdb.com . I've found mistakes here too but they have a pretty big list and from all regions. Most of the mistakes I've found is when a dvd is listed on the SS-SL page, you click on the link and it says the disc is dual layer or something. i think for the most part though, if you're looking for a specific DVD, and you type the name of it in and actually click on the link, you'll find what you're looking for.
http://www.imdb.com/Sections/DVDs/
http://www.imdb.com/Sections/DVDs/DiscFormats/SS-SL Single sided/Layer
http://www.imdb.com/Sections/DVDs/DiscFormats/DS-SL Double sided-Single layer
I just ordered my DVD burner today. I've been waiting for them to resolve the stupid DVD+R/W thing. I'm sticking to the format approved by dvdforum.com , they're the most compatible anyway. I ordered the dvr-104 by pioneer, the OEM bare drive. I've waited for awhile because I heard there will be a DVD Burner II drive that covers all the formats and a couple of new ones, but I'm a brat and I want my DVD burner now. BTW that one comes out in October probably.
The website I talked about in earlier posts is probably going to be a no go. I started thinking about it and I'm sure it would just cause too much trouble. That and everyone would try and rent the same DVDs off netflix and they'd all be out. I'd still like to keep this list going but I think a webpage dedicated to just that would cause too many problems. If anyone wants to start a webpage I already have the layout and some graphics to work with.
By the way, anybody with the new Mac OS X Jaguar, brace yourself. It doesn't let you mount DVD images anymore. I installed it from a Developer's Seed so they might fix this but I get the feeling it was intentional.
One more thing to comment on, and this is a long shot here. Does anybody know if the ever-coveted Salo DVD is single layer? Criterion's website doesn't say, criteriondvd.com doesn't say, it's not on the list I posted on the geocities webpage, and it's not in the imdb. I've read a lot about the movie and understand the it's pretty disturbing but paints a vivid picture of fascism and violence. The DVD officially released by Criterion has 29 chapters and the bootleg version put out by Facets in Chicago only has 9. If anybody has the official version please let me know if it is single layer or not. Later days vcdhelpers! -
Actually I tried a couple different Toast Images and none of them worked so I may have jumped the gun on this. The Gold Master version is out now and I expect they fixed the problem.
-
Star Trek TOS volumes 1-39 (40 was dual)
Star Trek II, III, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX (I & IV are dual)
And a lot of other early Paramount releases, serv's em right for being cheap and not giving us extras.
Most, if not all, of the Twilight Zone episode dvds
Dogma (single disc release)
Iron Giant
Ronin
Ghost in the Shell
Crimson Tide
The 5th element
Anything on the "Flipper Disc" lists out there. -
rudeboy, the reason why they make rental dvd's is because there is sometimes a six month rental only period before a dvd goes to retail. after that some rental shops sell off some of their rental dvd's of a film.
-
PETER PAN, BEAUTY & THE BEAST: THE ENCHANTED CHRISTMAS, THE JUNGLE BOOK, 101 DALMATIONS, THE LAND BEFORE TIME VII: THE STONE OF COLD FIRE, DAS BOOT (each side), WESTWORLD, STAR TREK: THE ORIGINAL SERIES VOLUME 3 (& probably all the other volumes), DOCTOR WHO: SPEARHEAD FROM SPACE
-
what about american pie. I am having trouble with the collectors edition. I am a newbie
-
How do you go about copying the DVD without extracting the .vobs? I have tried, and the copyprotection always shuts me down. I am very interested because when I rip a DVD I always have to exclude the extras.
Andy -
drewson99 to copy a dvd use dvd decrypter to rip the discs contents. select "rip all files". if it is under 4.7 gb then you can burn the files to a dvd-r using nero's dvd iso/udf option. if it is over 4.7gb, you will need to re-encode the film at a lower bitrate to fit it on to a dvd-r.
-
am i doing something wrong?, i can backup my copy of fast and furious but when i try unbreakable its over 5gb, and there both the same length movies, both are 107mins dd5.1 ntsc discs, i use smartripper and and ifoedit ver 088.
-
my guess is theat it has some extra features, or extra audio tracks or something.
Also, is there a detailed guide to doing a "rip all files" and then burning with Nero for a direct copy of a disc?
Andy -
Ghost666 - the copy of Fast and Furious I have is about 8GB, how did you back-up? Is there another version?
Andy -
Rental only DVD's are usually about 4 gig, The Order was, and a lot of them are only the film and some trailers.

Well I just got my DVD-R's in the mail and I burned my first couple of DVDs, Crumb and Happiness. It plays great, even in my old Sony. i bought the Combo Pack at Supermediastore which includes 100 Ritek's at 1.29 each plus 100 DVD cases for $158. This does seem like a lot but considering I'm saving hundreds in the long run, I had no problem with it. It was easier than I thought it would be. I’m not sure how to do it on a PC but on a Mac....
1. If you have OS X installed, start up with OS 9 instead and use DVDExtractor0.9b to rip the DVD image. If you are in OS X while using this app, you'll get a bad image, at least that's what happened to me. There are OS X apps that rip images for you but I’ve never had any luck with them. OSEx 0.0110a1never made images that Toast recognized and DVDBackup 1.2 doesn’t make images, it just extracts the Video_TS folders which you have to throw in Toast in the exact order that was on this disc (this just seems like too much work). Like I said, I’ve tried making images with OSEx and compared to DVDExtractor, it’s really slow, but if you prefer one of the other two programs, just skip the first two steps.
2. Make sure that the three boxs at the bottom are checked (Skip multiangle parts, Disable Macrovision, and Disable region code). I make the DVDs regionless even though it's not really necessary, I like to make the images regionless just in case I'm ever parachuted into Europe with my DVDs I'll be able to watch them. If you want to do this too, just make sure the box is checked. Most single layer DVDs won't have multi angle parts but just in case you want to watch the lame FBI warning on the Birth of a Nation put out by Madacy where you can see a guy sitting in a jail cell from different angles, be my guest.
3. After you have your image, all you should have to do is double click on it and press Record. Toast loads it and gets it ready to burn. I thought you would have to mount it first and burn it as a DVD but from what I’ve read, you don’t want to do that.
So that’s it, for Mac users that is. I’m sure it’s just as easy with a PC. I still browse that list that I posted a link to before of over 7000 DVDs but before I rent anything from Netflix or rent at the library, I always check the IMDB to verify they are single layered. There are some mistakes there too and they never have the newest DVDs, but they are reliable most of the time.
This is kinda getting off topic but does anyone know of a website that has high-resolution DVD covers. I’m not really interested in the websites that have a few really high quality dvd covers, just a place that has everything at a decent resolution. I tried Amazon, IMDB, and DVD store called DVDSoon. Both Amazon and IMDB had the same 184KB Image but DVDSoon had 188KB image. I know there is some place out there that has good quality covers that I don’t know about. I’m really interested in the front covers but if anyone knows a place that has the back too, that would be cool.

Every Hong Kong and Chinese film DVDs by "Tai Seng" are all single layered. And for those that are packed with extras, you'll also find them single layered on double sided discs.
That won't be a problem now would it?? -
Oh my. It looks like I’ve found another way to beat the system. I rented Shallow Grave thinking it was going to be a double sided, single layered DVD (widescreen on one side, P&S on the other). Well when I opened the case, get this; it’s a dual layer DVD. I’m thinking, “Damn, how am I going to back this thing up now.” Well this disc technically was a dual layer disc but really a half assed DVD in disguise. This was the second release of Shallow Grave, the first being a flipper. So really, all they did was squeeze the two aspect ratios onto a dual layer disc, it’s probably the exact same transfer, but since I don’t have the flipper version I can’t compare bitrates. Well I got to thinking, “Say, why don’t I delete the piece of crap P&S version from the disc, you know, being that only old woman prefer fullframe over widescreen”. So I went along and used OSEx to rip all of the files to my hard drive, and I know I said this program never usually works for me but that was with making disc images. I clicked the “Fmt” button and selected “DVD Folders” and waited.
Remembering from before that the files for widescreen are usually always a bit smaller than the files for P&S, I dropped everything in Toast under DVD. In Toast I removed these files (I didn’t delete them from my HD because I didn’t know if these were the right files):
VTS_03_0.VOB
VTS_03_3.VOB
VTS_03_1.VOB
VTS_03_4.VOB
VTS_03_2.VOB
So all I really did was delete track 3 from the disc. I’m not sure if I needed to do this but I then made a disc image from all these files, then double clicked the disc image when it was done and burned it. When you first put in the DVD it asks you if you’d like to watch the film in fullscreen or widescreen. I knew widescreen would work if I pressed that but I was curious what would happen if I selected fullscreen. I didn’t know if my DVD player would freeze up or what but guess what happened; it automatically played the widescreen version….flawlessly.
So I’ve changed my mind about this whole thing. I think as long as the widescreen movie files and all the of special features, including commentary and audio tracks, are all under 4.4 GB, then they’re asking for it. -
on the subject of making backups of films on dual layer dvd's i've also made some progress. someone on this website whose name i can't remember(sorry!) said that dvd workshop could accept dvd vob files if you combine them with vobmerge and rename the combined vob as an mpeg file. i tried it with the dual layer "made" and found that it worked! as the film itself was under 4.7gb i could have burnt it to dvd-r with workshop but i didnt bother as i had already encoded it to a vcd file. so if a film under 2 hours is on a dual layer dvd there is still a chance you can back it up without re-encoding. if anyone tries this tell us how you get on, because i'd like to know if you can still switch between audio tracks and turn on the subtitles even though you have not backed up the whole disc.
oh, more r2 rental dvd's under 4.7gb: tigerland, jay and silent bob strike back, kiss of the dragon... and shallow hal with the sexy Gwenth Paltrow that i backed up today! -
Look at www.dvdempire.com.
They show the type of the disc, single or dual layered. Every Single Layer disc can be copied straight (without stripping the menus / extras or languages). And almost all Dual Layered not (you need to strip something)
