previously I captured the dvd to my hdd, just recently I began to rip the .vob files to my hdd so now I notice the differences in total amount with movies.

Just go to a website like Amazon.com and search for the dvd you want to find out about and click on technical info for it. Under that they list whether it is dual or single layer.

A movie that is under the 4.7GB limit will fit on a DVD-R. Which means you can backup your movies and keep the originals in a safe place. (out of the way of destructive & careless fingers)

Oh my god! I haven't checked this topic in a long time because I always got an email when somebody posted and I haven't gotten one in months. Thank you so much to everyone who helped with this list. Over the next couple of days I'll go through my new dvd's and check which ones qualify for this list. I'll be listing the name of the movie, the region, the ISBN number, and if it's NTSC or PAL. 9.4gb dvd-r's are out but don`t know about the pc drives to support it

There are 9.4gb DVDrs but they are dual sided. It's not really to relevant to this discussion (unless there is a piece of software that can split a dual layer DVD across two sides).

Thanks rudeboy, just doing my part. With a little bit of determined hacking I've found that you can split a large DVD onto 2 smaller 4.7 disc, or a duel sided 9.4, and retain all the menus and extras. It's not easy or for the faint of heart, but it can be done. I usually place the movie on one side and the extras on the other. For all who want to try there is a great set of guides at

Okay I've been trying to compile a list but I've run into a couple problems, one of which is the UPC's in the spreadsheets. Most spread sheets only let you put 11 numbers in a cell, anything after that it converts to scientific notation. That and me just being really busy I didn't have a lot of time to contribute to this list. So far this is the list of all the DVD's that people have posted. The top ones are the ones I have checked already. I'm just copying and pasting from my spreadsheet but I think it's going to look really sloppy once I post it, oh well.

The only one I've come across that someone posted that shouldn't be on the list is A Bronx Tale. I thought there was only one version of this and the version I have is over 4.7GB.

One more thing, just in case any of you are unsure of this project let me assure you backing up DVDs like this works. I have a DVD-RAM burner and I ripped a DVD using DVDExtractor on a Mac and made a regionless and "macroless" image of the DVD. From that image I just dropped all the files in the ripped image into Toast and burned it as a DVD. After burning I put the DVD-RAM back in the drive and it played it just fine. I thought I could just burn the DVD from Toast using the Disk Image burning feature but that was giving me problems. So for the time being I guess you just have to drop all the files from the image DVDExtractor made into Toast. I'm pretty sure you still have to use a decrypting tool to rip it as an image before you burn the files to a DVD, I think it's impossible to move all the files from the DVD to your hard drive back to a blank DVD.

I think that covers everything. I've been really busy lately and I've been adding and checking the list every now and then. The format below shows how I've been listing the confirmed DVDs. If there is no objection, we should stick to this. I was orignally going to have more info on each disk (Director's Name, Production Company) but it was too much work and not that important. A couple notes on the Size section though, all the sizes you see are what I got from Mac OS X. I don't know if Windows figures the sizes of the DVD's differently. Second, the (Widescreen/Standard) means disks that are double sided with Widescreen on one side and Standard on the other. These should not be confused with "flippers", or DVD's that have the same movie in the same format, just continued, on the second side (ie old version of JFK and Casino). Let's try and keep "flippers" off the list because they'll take up two disks to back up and most likely have a better edition already, such as JFK. So keep those titles coming and I'll try to confirm mine as fast as I can. Later days.

I'm so glad someone decided to do this. I was just wondering if there was a list out that could list DVD's that are small enough to fit on a DVD-R. I personally would also like the list to include movies that can fit by keeping the film and one audio track, either DD 5.1 or DTS.

Get Over It

is over 4.7 gb, but i extracted the video/audio and the commentary track and it all fits on a 4.7 dvd-r. the only that sucked was i tried to manually add the chapters back in DVD Studio Pro and the time code was all funky within DSP, so after 5 minutes it only said 00:00:00:00, but when burned and played back the numbers are fine. other than that the dvd plays great just no chapters.

The BMW DVD for THe Hire short films series is under too.
