I wanted to know if there is any place that lists DVD's that are under 4.7GB. The reason I ask is so that we can easily see which ones we can backup without losing all the special features and spending hours burning. With the Pioneer DVD-R burners going down in price and DVD-R media as low as $6 bucks a disk it won't be long before eveyone stops converting these damn things and just backs them up on a DVD-R. This are the movies I've come across so far that are under 4.7GB: As Good As It Gets, Friday the 13th, Wes Craven's New Nightmare, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Criterion Collection of Brazil: Disk 3, and The City of Lost Children.
I don't know how easy it is for PC users to copy and burn a DVD but all a Mac user has do to is make an image of the DVD using DVD Extractor 0.9b and then burn it using Toast Titanium. That's it, takes less than an hour usually. It's just a matter of knowing which ones aren't dual layer and above the General Purpose DVD-R capacity (4.7GB). If there is no website that lists which DVD's are under 4.7GB, then maybe we can start one.

If your looking at the actual capacity of your dvd then yes look for sizes of 4.7 gigs or less but if you are ripping the vobs to your hard drive and looking at they're total size than they can only be 4.3 gigs and still fit on a
dvd-r. Files are not stored the same on your hard drive as they will be on the dvd-r so the actual capacity is somewhat misleading. -
Good point Adam. I was just looking at the size of the disk images DVDExtractor 0.9b made, ripping the vobs and burning them would work too. Making the "toast ready" disk images and burning them that way have is just the simplest way.

A DVD holds 4.7 GigaBytes BUT it is based on multiples of 1000 and not like in the computer world where 1 KiloByte = 1024. To get the computer GigaBytes take 4 700 000 000 / 1024 / 1024 / 1024 = 4.37 computer GB.

if you ripp just the vobs then burn them to dvdr they will not play as they need all files on original dvd i know ive tried they contain a lot of information such as extra audio and sub titles these need ifos to work believe me you need to reencode then use a authoring prog to rebuild the vobs and asociated files before they will work if they are over 4.7 i know ive tried and learnt the expensive way

WOW! good luck on NOT finding Dual layered DVD's 95% of any new DVD will be dual layered, just about the only single layered DVD's anymore are gonna be your $10 reissued ones.

Wow guys, settle down. I really don't want to extract the vobs and take out things. Thxkid is the only person that's sticking to the subject. Really, that's interesting that when you move the DVD files to your HD they shrink, but I would eventually burn them back to a DVD. I understand why you guys posted the info but it's not really answering my question. I'm going to ask in the simplest way I can. WHAT DVD'S CAN YOU EXTRACT AN ENTIRE IMAGE FROM WHICH CAN THEN BE BURNED ON TO A DVD-R, WITH ALL THE SAME FILES AS THE ORIGINAL. Really that's the question, I don't want to extract vobs and lose any of the features of the DVD, even the audio tracks. I want everything from the original. Now believe me, you certainly wowed me with your DVD expertise but it has nothing to do with my question. I'm asking for a list of DVD's not how the bytes on a DVD and computer differ. Thxkid, I understand that 95% are dual layered but that other 5% is what I want to know. A lot of the movies I buy are independent films or they are released by small production companies who can only afford the single layer DVD's for distribution. The DVD's I listed above that are capable of fitting on a DVD-R are over twenty dollars at Best Buy or some place like that. you won't find those kind of prices unless you order over the net through http://www.dvdpricesearch.com. And even if they are 10 dollars, Apple is selling a five pack for 30 bucks, that's 6 dollars a disk. 4 bucks is a lot if you back up 50 DVDs. If you've heard of a place that lists the DVDs that fit the Criterion then post it, if not maybe people could list the DVD's they own that are like this. We could list the ISBN number or something too so we don't get mixed up with all the different editions. But please I don't really care about mangling the DVD's files, I just want the list. Thank you.

i just checked Bottle Rocket (ISBN 0-7678-2140-
, Harold and Maude (0-7921-6508-X) and Gattaca (0-7678-0571-2) and these films can fit on a DVD-R. These are the kind of movies I'm talking about too. DVDs. These DVDs are the underdogs of movies, they're cult classics, they're horror films. These are the kind of movies I like and are looking forward to backing up. Great films that for some reason or another did get a great dvd, that's what I'm looking for.

There are a lot of DVDs that are not dual-layered... though I agree that most newer DVDs of Hollywood movies are. Titles that I remember include (region 4 PAL only):
- all the DragonballZ titles
- all the Neon Genesis Evangelion titles
- Pokemon the first movie and Pokemon 2000
- Gattaca
- Dead Poet's Society
- many others...
Regards.

Actually you can reduce the size of the vobs from 1gig to about 800mb a vob by using stream decoding with smartripper and only select the video and one language that you want with the 6channels of course. Forget the freaking subtitles unless you really need them. IE can not hear..
Then you can fit a 2 hour movie on a DVD-R no problem.

Damn boys this is an old post I nearly forgot about it. I haven't found any new ones so far, but when I see an old foreign film at the library or at Borders or something I ask myself if it's a single layer DVD under 4.7GB. Just the other day I say a great Italian film on DVD entitled the Bicycle Thief and by the look of the box and the lack of special features I got the impression that it was under 4.7GB. I think we'd be able to find a lot of foreign films that meet this standard. Thanks for resurrecting an old post.

I was checking out Office Space and I had a feeling it would be under 4.7GB and sure enough it was. Then it struck me, if we make this list and dvd burners become popular soon the companies will rerelease them. I heard that Office Space is getting a special edition soon and Gattaca has already been made into a Superbit DVD. Hopefully they'll release the other titles with better features as well. I saw Trainspotting at the flea market the other day and with the lack of features on that I'd imagine that that's under 4.7GB too. Trainspotting would be a good example too because they realize that such a great film deserves a better DVD so Criterion is supposed to release a Special Edition. Depending on the size and popularity of this list and the sales of DVD burners, we could force the DVD producers to never release another 4.7GB DVD again. They think that if they release a shabby version of a DVD they can come out with a better one years later and make money off that one too. I'm no economics major but I think that if we "backup" these DVD's and and they see the sales are horrible, they would make less single layered, piss poor DVDs (that or they wouldn't rerelease the movie at all because they'd look at the sales and give up on it, but hey, lets not think that way).
Office Space [no isbn number on mine but the upc is 086162162756]
Alfred Hitchcock: the collection [no isbn number but upc is 018111996839]
100 Girls (great movie, it's like a seinfeld episode crossed with the raunchyness of American Pie....but more so. ISBN 1-588-17-264-3
That's it for now. I've obtained a lot of DVD's since I last posted so I'll skim through those and make a list including name, size of disc, and isbn number.
