Sony announced at the ces expo that they will ship dual layer burners this quarter. I read the announcement on the cnn web site today. Here is a link to the article
http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/ptech/01/08/bus2.ptech.gadgets.ces/index.html
Here's the quick blurb about it:
Sony Double-Layer DVD
Sound bite: Hot off the presses, the first of the double-layer DVD drives and discs will ship this quarter. Sony, historically a flagship in digital media storage, will be doing a first-look demo.
Real-world business app: With nearly twice the capacity of standard discs, or about 8.5GB each, double-layer DVDs will no doubt be instantly christened the non plus ultra of digital storage for entertainment-media types. www.sony.com

-
I hope there are some good firmware writers out there so I can flash my A06 to write on dual layer disks.
-
think you got problems now with skipping and cheap media:
wait till the laser has to read two layers that have been burned instead of pressed -
I have a stupid question, do dual layer DVDs have 2 different formats too? -Rs & +Rs?

Hey, I successfully made the transition from VCD to DVDR, can't I relax now?
I'm getting old, I can't keep up with this non-stop march of technology -

everyone will have to learn layer breaks , which are done in authoring - not burning ...

Yeah I imagine that at least at the onset it will require complete reauthoring to back up a DVD to DL DVDr because doesn't the data have to be equal on both layers? I doubt most commercial DVDs are like this, so you'd have to make adjustments. I honestly won't suprised at all if in the future it is as simple as making an image and then burning it. I always said dual layer DVDs would never happen, and now they not only have them, but they have the capability to upgrade some singler layer burners to this technology via firmware. So at this point nothing is going to suprise me anymore. We are so spoiled now.

Everyone needs to just slow down on this and wait for some other guy to buy one. I'm sure a lot of us are gonna do that. LOL -
Hey, i hope this doesn't sound like i'm jumping the gun a little, but I have a Plextor PX-708UF DVD +-R burner. WIll a firmware update from Plextor allow me to burn on DL DVDs with my current burner? Or will I have to fork over the duckets and buy a new one?
Do you doubt my courage comrade Khoi? -
So one thing I haven't heard about the dualies is what will their burn rates be? 1x 2x?
Ok, I just saw on the linked post from above that it's 1x...is this at the same data rate that current dvd burners use? If so, that translates to about 1.5 hours to 2 for a full 8g burn, correct? ug, i think I'll wait until at least 4x before I jump in!Boy do I love my avatar!
