I'm a newbie and I loaded my VCD mpeg file into Virtual Dub to pull the audio and video in sync. There was no problem by following these steps:-
Choose - "Audio>Full processing mode";
Choose - "Audio>Interleaving and adjust skewing value";
However, when I came to save the file I found out that I could only choose "File>Save as avi". No such command for saving back to mpeg. And saving in avi format resulted in 4Gb large file with audio only.
Have I done something wrong? Please help!

You haven't done something wrong. Unfortunatelly though, programs like VirtualDUB and others can't "save" the file as MPEG. You need to use a program that is called MPEG Encoder to encode the AVI file into MPEG.
Popular encoders include Tmpgenc, MainConcept, CCE, Hero Convert, Honestech MPEG Encoder, and more. You can find trial versions of Tmpgenc and Mainconcept as well as CCE Basic in the links of the tools section.The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know. -
Thank you for your reply but my problem hasn't solved yet.
The problem is I can't obtain an output file for conversion in the TMPGenc back to mpeg again. What I got was a large 4Gb avi file. When the file was played, there was sound only but without video frames advancing. My original input mpeg file was only 400Mb which is to be burnt into VCD.
Therefore, my question is - how to save this synchronised mpeg as a suitable sized avi output file for further conversion. I believe I must have done something wrong in the "save" procedure. -
Hello pb1,
Choose, video>fullprocessing mode.
Then video>compression.
You can then choose the codec you want to compress the film. Then save your file as an avi. See if that helps.
