  1. can anyone help me out with this quick question?

i checked compatibility of my dvd player at this site and it says: "MPEG1/2 ISO, plays MPEG1/MPEG2 files with no authoring".

what exactly does that mean (ISO, file with no authoring, etc)?

can i copy a mpeg on a cd or dvd and my dvd player will play it or do i need some type of special browser/viewer?

    thanks in advance

It means that you should be able to view VCD's and SVCD's that do not contain custom menus.

  3. If the DVD player states support for raw or non-authored MPEG-1 and 2 files, you should just be able to burn the MPEG files to a CD or DVD like you would data, and play them on the DVD player. No need to re-encode or author, unless the MPG files do not adhere to the standards and fall outside of the players bitrate range.

Works on my Apex player. Give it a try -- all you have to lose is 1 CD-R to test. Or a CDRW if your player is not too finnicky.

  4. Do you mean convert to DVD MPEG in TMPENC?

  5. I think it means that standalone player supports playing of MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 (.mpg) files, without having to author them or burn them in a DVD-VIDEO format.

This doesn't seem to be a very common feature. But essentially, if the resolution, audio, framerate and bitrate are supported by the player. Then all you need to do is burn an ISO standard data disc (on DVD-+R(RW) or CD-R(RW)) and it will be able to play the mpg files like how many standalone players can play mp3 and jpeg data discs.

I'm going to now agree with Ripper2860 and bdc. Makes a lot more sense.

Also keep in mind that by authoring as (S)VCD, you get 10-15% more data on a CD-R. More data=higher picture quality (if the playing time is constant). You can also do fancy menus, add chapter points and stuff that wont be possible if you're just writing the mpeg file as data to a CD-R
The authoring stage doesn't add that much (time wise) to the whole process of creating a (S)VCD.
