  1. My burner is a Toshiba SD-R5002 (DVD-R). It burns at 2X max but I've always heard that the slower you burn the better, so I've always burned at 1X using Ritek G03 1X DVD-R media. My question, OTHER than the write speed, is there any other differences bewteen the Ritek 1X and 4X media? In other words, if I were to continue to burn at 1X, would I gain anything by switching to their G04 4X media? Are there any other overall quality differences?

  2. Except that most x1 and x2 drives won't burn x4 media. Most disc manufacturers will warn you of this whenever you purchase x4 discs.

  3. I think you will find most will, BUT not at 4x, obviously. If you have a 2x writer that is all you will get out of it, firmware allowing of course.

Some drives, most noticeably the Pioneer's upto and including the 05 IIRC, need a firmware update in order to avoid possible damage to the drive before using 4x media. I occasionally use 4x media in my 2x A04 without problems.

  4. I have a Pioneer A03 (yes it is old) and with the firmware update I can write at 2x on the Ritek G04's with out a problem. I have over 100 burns doing this and have not had one coster. Very stable meida. So don't hesitate to burn at more than 1x.

RITEK G04's have a 1x, 2x, and 4x write strategy. You can burn them at 1x.

However, some 1x drives don't recognize them (it's a firmware issue), so they use a default write strategy. I guess it depends on your drive.

2x should have zero issues, since RITEK G03's have been around awhile.

Could be interesting for older slower burners as i have heard that 1X dvd's are no longer being produced...

I guess a firmware update would cure this if the manufacture's saw fit to release one...

  7. I have Princo 4X DVD-R's that will only burn at 1x on my Toshiba SD-R5002. I had to update the firmware to even get the drive to recognize them as blank dvd-r's (recognized it as a CD-R before firmware update), but I can still only get the drive to burn them at 1x. Anybody know of a newer/better firmware for this drive?
