    I have a Sharp DV-RW2 recorder.
I have used Pinnacle Studio 8 to render and compile DV files to make a DVD image..
I have used Nero 6 and Pioneer A06 to burn the image file produced by Studio 8 to DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW.
Strangely enough, both the rewritable discs will play on the Sharp, but not the write-once discs. The Sharp recognizes a DVD+RW and will play it even though this is a "-" recorder. So the question I have is, why does it play DVD-RW and DVD+RW but not DVD-R and DVD+R? All discs were made from the same image file. What is the difference between write-once and rewritable discs aside from the obvious?

  3. Interesting...

Whar are the options (how do you burn) that you use during burning with Nero ?

Do you have another DVD Player to test those discs ?

What brand (manufacturer id) are those +R, -R ? (try DVDInfoPro)

BTW: Based on documentation Sharp should not play +RW. Did you change bittseting ?

Nothing wrong with the discs. All 4 types play flawlessly from start to finish on both my PC drives (Pioneer A06 & Sony DVD-ROM). I don't have another standalone DVD player though.

    DVD-R = TDK (Japan)
    DVD-RW = TDK (Japan)
    DVD+R = Fuji (? Taiwan)
    DVD+RW = Fuji (Ricoh Japan)

I don't know anything about bit-setting. Can you explain this?

Sharp will recognize the DVD-R disc (it says "DVD-R" in the window, but will not play). Tries to read DVD+R, but can't. Recognizes DVD+RW and just says "DVD" in the window (must be assuming this is a pressed DVD).

I used both Pinnacle Studio 8 and Nero Express 6 to burn the DVD image made by Studio 8, both with same results. So, I am assuming the fault here is with the Sharp recorder.

Which one for which disc ? And what were your settings in Nero ? Does it provide you that ?

Not sure what you mean by Nero settings. I just load in the VIDEO_TS folder made by Studio 8 and click BURN.

If you mean bitrates - the disc is 71 min. long with PCM audio (video bitrate is about 6400).

I made 2 DVD+R and DVD+RW discs (one by Nero and one by Pinnacle). The others were only Nero cause I didn't feel like wasting any more discs if there is a problem here.

  7. Based on what I see and what I know... only posibility so far is media issue. But I might be wrong. Try to use different media or try to use same media in Recorder for recording to see what is going to happen. Other than that I am out of ideas.

This is great idea. Try it.

Finally, success with -R. I used PowerProducer 2 to burn the DVD from the folder created by Pinnacle Studio 8. I really don't know what PowerProducer is doing differently from Studio 8 and Nero 6, but it worked using the same TDK discs. This PowerProducer program is actually turning into something quite useful. Not only did it make a playable -R when Pinnacle and Nero couldn't, but it also can read -RW in VR mode on WinXP. I'll admit I'm still confused as to why -RW and +RW worked before, but not -R or +R when everything was burned from the same image using the same program.

    What I did before:
I used both Pinnacle's own "make disc from image" and Nero's DVD-Video template. -RW and +RW worked fine this way, -R and +R did not.
I did try the one-on-one copy method from +RW to +R using Pinnacle Instant Copy. NO GO on the Sharp, but it's possible the Sharp doesn't play +R at all, though it does play +RW.

Today I noticed that the "no menu" discs I created using TMPGEnc DVD Author and burned with Nero 5.5.10 will NOT play back on JVC, Sony, Panasonic and Pioneer DVD players. The fault lies with the way Nero creates a DVD ISO. The exact same VOBs, IFOs, etc. burned with Stomp 4.6 play back flawlessly on the same decks that will not play the Nero burned discs! Oddly enough though, the Nero burned discs play flawlessly in my Malata and Apex decks...
