  1. I always thought that Panasonic's FR (Flexible Recording) is cool thing and I was looking into other DVD Recorders that have this function that will allow to set more exact time that will fill DVD disc.

Pioneer came with something called MN (Manual Recording mode). What they did is that they split time between 60min and 360min into 32 steps. Steps are from 5min (between XP and SP) to 15min (between LP and EP) so you can more or less specify any time that you might need.

So for me it was same thing and I thought... Cool... they have it too. Until somebody point out something and I realized that MN is much better. Why and When ?

Imagine that yuo want to record 3 episodes of 1h TV Series into one DVD ...

Now with Panasonic you will have to use 4h mode since it is not possible tu use FR in this case. But with Pioneer you can specify MN 15 for each episode and BINGO You can do it.

    So .... What do you think ? Cool, isn't it ? 8)

  3. You are probably right that behind the scenes Panasonic is using some "steps" too.

Exactly. Although wouldn't you just dial in a time of 4 hours on the Panasonic for the total times you require, and then after the first 30 minute program, the dialled in time would drop to show 3hr 30 minutes etc, or does it only work on a one shot basis?
I am lost... What is your question ?

In Panasonic when you are using FR mode you are teling how long you are going to record. Bittrate is adjusted so it will fill whole disc. Minimum 1h and max 6h.

  5. I believe it will let you set only 3h 30min next time and not 4h anymore.... I can try during weekend or maybe somebody can test it and let us know.

Anyway... it is not realy same since you have to manualy STOP recording. So you can't shedule it through timer (which would be my case since I always forget about those new Friends episodes )
