I've problems in this sort of area with IDE Controllers using Microsoft proprietry drivers , you may want to use drivers from the actual controller or chipset manufacturer which tend in my own findings to be much more reliable , I am assuming that both your optical drives are connected to the secondary channel .

Are both drives set to master , cos if they are that would be the problem you will need to set one of the drives to slave mode (preferably the Writer) and ensure that the drive set to master is plugged into the terminal end of the cable

  6. Thank you for you patience with me. My DVD Writer is set to master and my DVD Rom is set to something else but not slave. I am work at the moment so I can't check sorry. Where will I find the terminal end cable?

Just make sure your dvd-rom drive is set to slave and keep your dvd writer set to master, dont worry about the cables.

Cable select is the third option which selects whether the drive is master or slave depending on which of the two cable connectors you use . I've never used as it can cause problems .

Position on the IDE does not matter. It is essential that one drive is jumpered as the master and the second drive be jumpered as the slave.
Never put a HD on the same cable as a CD/DVD drive. CD/DVD runs at a much slower speed than a HD and the IDE channel will run at the speed of the slowest component on it.

HDD is Hard Disk Drive and UDMA 2 and UDMA 6 are systems that the computer uses to transfer data from a drive to the controller , these are however not relevant to your current problem .

Stuart Robinson, one thing you have to watch for on the forums is that sometimes people talk about side issues that veer off from the main discussion.

  19. Does your ribbon cable have a few wires in the middle of the ribbon sort of twisted anywhere on it? If so that is where the problem lies and you will need to replace the cable with a standard ribbon cable. These are only used when both drives are set to "Cable Select", a system not much used these days.

  20. Not that I have noticed it just looks like a standard ribbon cable. My system is only 18mths old so it should be quite up to date.

  21. I had trouble with a couple systems that were brand new and would only work when both drives were set to cable select. Since your previous setup worked well with cable select, you might as well try it with your new settup. The worst that could happen is that it will not work.

  23. Well, you should probably look at it instead of kinda guessing

    It should be something like

    C-M-S
    S-A-L
    :-:-:

Crude, but you get the idea.. I've never seen any real standard for them, and I"ve also never seen a drive NOT list its scheme, so you can probably figure it out if you take the drive out and look on the sticker or near the pins

  24. I have looked at it and have changed the Jumper settings as stated in postings

Stu Rob, Check to see if you have plugged in your cable correct. The plug at the end of the cable has one red wire on the end. The end with the red wire should be close to the power plug on the drive. maybe you have it flipped??? Check both of your drives. Hope this, or some other suggestion works!!

    Good luck---DVDDave
