Welllll........if we're talking about legal downloads (hopefully) then www.movielink.com is one of the well known ones you can check out. I think even Kazaa is going to start offering legal downloads of movies soon, but I wouldn't use them. :P

"Good" movies is a subjective term...one person might consider Debbie Does Dallas a classic "good" movie
Anyway the site I mentioned above has new movies, did you check it out? It is a pay site, and they are legal downloads. I think the movie only lasts a certain amount of time though. I haven't tried it myself.

I tried it just now, it's working fine here. Maybe something with your PC setting in IE? It isn't down so there must be something wrong on your end.

I took these off their website just a moment ago to show you:

    PPV is still easier.

    Or Blockbuster.

Or if you like sitting on your butt at home, and never leave, and have the movie any time for that time period ... then Netflix. Set it back outside for the mailman to pick up when it's time to go back.

You could always use a US based proxy server

  13. Hi,

Aren't MovieLink taking a bit of a risk by giving people compressed video? Obviously, it's:

    - LEGAL
    - Protected against copy
    - In some sort of container that self-destructs after 24hr

But if it can be played it can be copied, right? How do they protect their movies? What format do they use? Some people can't decompress DivX or XviD, and surely MPEG-1/2 would be either poor-ish quality compared to MPEG-4 or too large a filesize to be practical.

Also, does anyone know when they're planning to extend to the UK? I can't access their site as I'm not from the US, hence the questions!

    Thanks,

I remember seeing it when I was in grade school...I thought it was the best film I'd ever seen. To this day I still think it's good, but I've only seen it once since highschool. Now I'll probable go out and find it somewhere....

A little more about it from usatoday:

    Flicks are just clicks away

More Hollywood hits than ever are legitimately available online with today's launch of Movielink.com, from Sony, MGM, Paramount, Warner Bros. and Universal studios.
If this step forward seems a long time coming, just wait until you start the download process.

In trial runs with the service last week, I was able to choose the 81-minute 2002 comedy Orange County with a few clicks of the mouse and after filling in some credit card data. An hour and 43 minutes later, via my DSL connection — about 380 kilobits a second, or more than seven times as fast as the best dial-up speed — the film was ready for viewing. The two-hour, 20-minute spy thriller The Hunt for Red October took two hours and 26 minutes to get to my desktop.

Movielink is not to blame; anyone who has worked with video files knows they are huge. Downloads at rival CinemaNow are just as lengthy; Erin Brockovich clocked in at 2-1/2 hours.

Nonetheless, these sites are a great improvement over the alternative: going to pirate sites such as Kazaa and Morpheus and trolling for bootleg copies of movies. Those pirated versions are usually shot with a camcorder from the projection booth. The free files often quit in the middle of a download and have to be restarted, or worse, cut off before the movie is finished.

If you're willing to put in the time, here's how Movielink works:

Browse through the movie selection and click your choice, with trailers, still photos and descriptions to help your decisions. Prices range from $1.99 to $4.99. The newest films tend to be about 9 months old, the same as pay-per-view offerings. They have already been on the shelves at Blockbuster. A look at similar offerings at In Demand, which offers PPV to cable systems, shows Movielink with many of the same titles, such as Ocean's Eleven and Queen of the Damned. The big exception was Disney's Monsters, Inc. Disney, along with 20th Century Fox, isn't aligned with Movielink and hasn't made its films available.
The typical e-commerce transactions follow. You register your name, address and credit card info, choose a screen name and password, then download special software that guides the movie file to your hard drive and automatically deletes it after you've watched it. (Good thing, too — files can be half a gigabyte and larger.)
Choose whether you want to see the film using RealPlayer or Windows Media software, both of which are standard, free Web programs.
    Then wait.

Hours later, after the "download is complete" window arrives, click play — remembering that from that moment, you have 24 hours to watch the film, as many times as you want. Both Windows Media and Real have fast-forward and rewind buttons, which basically just speed the action a bit.

What's disappointing, compared to TV (no surprise), is the picture quality.

What wasn't expected, though, was just how fuzzy Movielink movies were at full screen — considering how impressive other forms of video on the Web can look. In fact, Movielink says it chose downloading over streaming (instant viewing) because downloads generally offer superior image quality.

Yet in the four films I watched from Movielink — two using Windows Media, the other two Real — at full screen, the images looked similar to an enlargement of a low-resolution digital photo. On my desktop, with a 15-inch Sony LCD monitor that generally looks stunning, Orange County, Red October and The Sweetest Thing all began as small on-screen boxes, usually a sign that a blow-up to full-screen size will not work. Good hunch; they looked acceptable at half-size.

At rival CinemaNow, however, the download of Brockovich looked fine, even at full screen, as did Ocean's Eleven. (Both services say they use similar "bit rates," a measure of how much image data is captured, but CinemaNow uses the newer Windows Media 9 format; Movielink uses version 8 and Real 8.) CinemaNow is similarly priced and has the same 24-hour deadline.

What most consumers will care about initially is selection, and CinemaNow pales to Movielink. Though two of Movielink's five backers have made their films available to CinemaNow, the other three — MGM, Paramount and Sony — have not. The movie Web site Intertainer shut down in October, charging that major studios were refusing to license films to them.

Then there are the restrictions. I found Orange County so funny and enjoyable I wanted to share it with my wife and son. But I couldn't move it to another computer and bring it to the living room. Movielink and CinemaNow's security prevent users from copying to a DVD or transferring to another machine. The family could have crowded around my desk, but that was unlikely, considering the nice couch in the living room.
The security rules may have sounded good in a boardroom, but they won't play well in the real world.

I'm sure it is only a matter of time before this is cracked, but if the quality is as poor as this reviewer says, who'd want to keep it anyway? This whole idea probably won't fly. Back to the drawing board...

Since this is OT anyway, I thought I'd mention what happened to me around 1975 when I saw my first "porno" movie - "The Story of O". I was living in St. Petersburg, Florida at the time my brother and I decided to go see it (I was 17, and it was rated X - 18 or over only). No one carded me anyway, but what was funny happened on the way out. In the crowd of people coming out of the theater I spotted our neighbors from across the street, a straight-laced, church-going, bible-thumping couple whose daughter I had been forbidden to date after we were caught getting frisky together in the garage (she was 16 - looked 21, you know the type). I walked up behind them and said "Good movie, huh?". Their faces turned deep red and they actually almost ran away from me, not saying a word. From then on, when I'd see them outside in their yard, they would go back inside when they would see me coming out. They never spoke another word to me from that point on. This went on for over a year, until we moved from the area. I guess then they heaved a sigh of relief. Just goes to show, everyone has skeletons in their closet.

The movie itself I thought was ho-hum, I didn't get all the B&D action in it at all. Didn't turn me on (at least not at that age...). I liked "Emanuelle" a lot more, saw it around the same time. Anyone remember that movie? I think it had a french actress Sylvia Kristel in it, seems to me she did more of those same movies later, but I never saw them.

Hmmm. Seems like there's some pr0n aficianados on here, wonder how many???

If you have a funny story about the first time you saw a pr0n movie, let us all hear it. Need some laughs this afternoon.

  18. Well I will never turn down a good opportunity to talk about porn........hehehe. So here is my story, but not nearly as entertaining as yours roundabout.

The first time I saw a porn was at my friends house in 4th or 5th grade. His mom owned a movie store so there were numerous titles at our disposal. They had garages just full of movies.....any kind of genre you can think of. But we found the porn stash and thats all we worried about. I think our favorite at the time was Asses to Asses, Lust to Lust......hahahah porns have great names.

We noticed some titles would disappear and we had no idea where they were going. We eventually found alot of them in his parents bedroom......hahahah I gave him so much shit about his parents banging while watching porn....hahahaha.

Eventually we found out that another friend was also hijacking our porn stash. He was Mormon...hahah. And everyone knows most Mormons wouldnt even think of such a thing. But he isn't the practicing type. But his brother was and it was found out that his brother eventually took some of them on his mission in South America with him when he went. INCLUDING ASSES TO ASSES, LUST TO LUST.

We were pissed to say the least. Like you said roundabout people do have some skeletons in their closet.

Yea, saw all those - none of those are actually porn movies though, even though they carried an X rating at the time of release.
Those would be R-rated by today's standards...or NC-17 at most.
Those movies would probably bore most guys

Corinne Clery, a mainstream French actress, starred in Story Of O
You might've seen her the James Bond movie, Moonraker or the Italian made Star Wars rip-off, The Humaniod or the scifi comedy, Yor, Hunter From The Future

Sylvia Kristel has aged a good bit, Corinne Clery still looks pretty good these days.

VH1 was running a I Love The 70s marathon last week, and were showing a bunch of clips from Debbie Does Dallas - now that's a porn movie.
Who would've thought a music channel would be showing hardcore flicks

My favorite title:"ET - The extra testicle" and "My big fat greek woody". Who dreams up this stuff? Better yet, who makes an entire website devoted to listing these titles? I wonder if they're all real titles or someone just dreamed them up...BTW, I tried to clean up the titles a little so no one would be too offended by them...

Those movies would probably bore most guys

VH1 was running a I Love The 70s marathon last week, and were showing a bunch of clips from Debbie Does Dallas - now that's a porn movie.
Who would've thought a music channel would be showing hardcore flicks
Yeah, next we'll have pr0n on Discovery Channel...

You're right, they are tame now compared to what there is out there, and they even bored me when I was 17, though the nudity wasn't bad

I didn't see DDD until years after is was out, I was chicken to go into a porno theater (after my previous experience seeing the first one) until I came to CA years later, went to the Mitchell Bros. cinema in Santa Ana (or near there, so long ago I hardly remember). One of those brothers killed the other or something like that (or was it his girlfriend, don't remember), not too long ago. Well, maybe it was a while ago. Memory is getting clouded...

Now it's possible to download all you ever want, and if you have eMule P2P, you can go to a site like www.pornodonkey.com and find anything. There's another one I can't post the name of that has tons of it, something like pu**yprovider.com, you figure it out

Ahhhh.... DUH. Of course they like like garbage on your computer monitor, so does most VCD at full screen, at least if you run any kind of resolution. How many times VCD is a 1024x768 resolution? Maybe the fool should have played those movies out through the video out of his display card to a normal (SD) TV. I bet they look a lot better that way, but I bet they still look bad on a HDTV.
Hope is the trap the world sets for you every night when you go to sleep and the only reason you have to get up in the morning is the hope that this day, things will get better... But they never do, do they?

    Exactly my sentiments.

If I were to pay for a movie I would want speeds similar to that of the trailer site that Apple has (900kb's +)

Speaking of speed, read some of this article about what they're doing from the CEO of Movielink -
    http://www.cedmagazine.com/ced/2003/0903/id2.htm

    A bit of the interview:

CED: So, if a customer wanted to download a title, maybe one option would be for them to open up the bandwidth for the period of time it takes to download the movie, and charge for that extra bandwidth?

Ramo: What I was thinking of is, as operators want to move people up the price value curve, they could provide a premium application like movies. Then we become a better product offering to consumers as the speeds go up. You could see marketing with a bundled premium offer to either acquire or retain a customer or move them up that price value curve.

CED: What download times have your customers been getting recently?

Ramo: On a cable modem when nobody else in the neighborhood is on, it might be 15 minutes. Generally, though, you might say that 1.5 megabit last-mile connection speeds [are] probably a half-hour. 1 megabit is probably 45 minutes; 350 kilobits-per-second might be about an hour-and-a-half. It depends on the last-mile speed.
