To qualify this i mean a movie length video (1-3hrs) source and with a modern PC -- something made this century.
This question came to mind when i set up an encode to MPEG2 (dont use MPEG2 much mostly use MPEG4) and with only noise reduction filter on it had an estimated time of 105hrs![]()
source: 1:28 hr 111gig HuffyUV file.
Using system in sig.

23 hours. I was using my P4 1.5GHz to convert the Shawshank Redemption to DivX using Gordian Knot. Everything set to snailpace, and seven passes. Got it down to 700MB with fairly nice quality.

which version of DivX is that ???
23 hours is bout normal for me for a 2-pass High everything settings in XviD and average length movie.
I am putting together a P4 2.4 (@3.5) by the end of next week, as an encoding box to help get through all my weekly encodes.
Should make a boost to it allAMD 64 X2 6000+ @3,000 Mhz (stock) | MSI K9N Ultra | Corsair Value/Kingston 6,144MB DDR 667 | 8800GT stock | 3710GB of storage | Powered by Mandriva 2009.1

It's version 5.0.2 - 5.1.1 doesn't work for me.
I have my DVD --> DivX process sorted and it yields high quality files. If it ain't broke, why fix it?

nice post..
me ??
I think it was about 17 hours, if memory serves me, ..long time ago w/ my
older pc setup K7T Pro2-A (MS-6330) - Athlon 900mhz w/PC133 128MB
I was using a bunch of Filters, making xSVCD's (aka, CVD) at the time, and
using my DC10+ ( though I didn't really need to.. I just wasn't skilled enough
to realise it :P )
Today, I'm not sure. I have a VHS ws of Star Wars SE (ANH) to do but I
have them split up into (four 4gig and three 3.6g chunks) and it's a bit messy
this time around for me.
Now that I'm more skillful :P I'm not going to be using any filtering, so my
encode times should be much reduced - making 720 x 480 WS dvd's :P

48hrs.
That's what I get everytime I encode DV to mpeg2 using Mastering Quality in Procoder. This is on an Athlon 1.333. -
Hopefully in the summer I'll be building myself a nice new machine, with an Athlon XP3200 in it. That'll speed things up a little from my P4 1.5!

A review on Anandtech with the new 800mhz FSB P4's and Barton Athlons; the several encoding benchies it did, i worked out that equal chips (2600+ and 2.6 etc) the P4 was 20-30% faster
My question is, does that only apply to Windows or its the same in Linux too ?AMD 64 X2 6000+ @3,000 Mhz (stock) | MSI K9N Ultra | Corsair Value/Kingston 6,144MB DDR 667 | 8800GT stock | 3710GB of storage | Powered by Mandriva 2009.1

I want to be able to afford an Intel rig, but I can't! I'm on a bit of a budget, but I'll see what I can put together.
The reason I chose the 2800+, as I have mentioned, is the ease of overclocking. Essentially, the 2500, 2800, 3000 and 3200 are the same chips and are all capable of overclocking to 3200 speeds. Read this month's CustomPC magazine for a great article where they actually did this.
Just for interest, would you like me to post up the specs and price of a comparable Intel rig once I have specced it out?
Thanks,

oh you know the Intel rig is gonna be dearer.
If you want a top performing system at a budget price, grab a 1.4 Duron (cheap as chips) clock it to 2.1-2gig. Enable the extra cache thats been disabled so you have 512 L2 cache (640L1+L2) the same thats on a Thoroughbread and add an NF2 mobo !
The durons are essentially the old 1700's etc with half the cache disabled.
My 1700 still runs at 2600+ and has a greater overclock yield then many Barton cores.
Food for thought anyway.
(PS i managed to get a second hand P4 that can do 3.5ghz at 1.57 vCore for AU$220 and a mobo AU$120 so didnt cost too much at all)AMD 64 X2 6000+ @3,000 Mhz (stock) | MSI K9N Ultra | Corsair Value/Kingston 6,144MB DDR 667 | 8800GT stock | 3710GB of storage | Powered by Mandriva 2009.1

The Intel rig worked out £70 more, for a 2.6GHz chip.
I never knew that Durons actually had the cache DISABLED! How do you re-enable it?
I think I'll just be going with the 2800 --> 3200. Make for the fastest Athlon I can get just now without 64-bit. My budget isn't that low.
(No relevance to this at all) I was revising for my exams and it started with thunder and lightning outside. Then came the half-inch wide hailstones! It kept up for about 20 minutes! I really hope it snows....
Take it easy,
