  1. OK I'm going completely nuts over this whole which DVD media is made by whom mess. It all started when I read all the bad stuff about Verbatim and Memorex, here in this forum. I'd just ordered a 25 pack online of Memorex 4x +R disc's and after reading about them I canceled my order. Even though 3 disc's from two 5 packs I had "already burned" read RICOHJPNR01 with DVDinfo (I just DL'ed it so it's the new ver.) So then this sale came up last week for the two 15 packs of Verbatim 4x disc's I decided since I had DVDinfo I'd buy and then test them out. If they were not the good ones I'd take them back. When I tested them DVDinfo reported that it could not read the Manufacture ID nor the Media Id Code Speed. So I freaked and took them back. Instead I bought the 25 pack of TDK's that CompUSA had on sale for $35. When I test them I get the same info.
No ID code could be found and worse yet I get this : Available Write Descriptor CLV 2.4x ! So yesterday I came back to this forum and read from a couple of guys that said you can't get the info unless you burn to the disc. I can ID the TDK blank that came with my burner
(TDK 420N/1.39 firmware) and the 3 Memorex disc's that I've burned to. But the blanks I still have come up with no info.
So I'm thinking that I have it all figured out tell today on another forum where I posted that you can't read a disc tell it's been burned and a guy told me I was nuts. He had just tested some blanks he bought and they ID fine. Here's his remarks to me:

I've never heard of having to burn them first. That makes absolutely no sense. The disc ID is stamped when it's manufactured not when you burn it.
    And:
    jlc_38,
Just confirmed that you were mis-informed. Stuck in a TDK -R/+R and Fuji +r and it ID'ed the blank discs correctly with dvdinfopro. Maybe check for a program update and make sure you have the latest firmware for your drive?.

    The 4x TDK+R were RICOHJPNR01 8x Max
    The 4x TDK-R were TTG01 4x Max
    The 4x Fuji+R were RICOHJPNR01 8x Max

Can someone please help me understand what is going on here.
Thank you all very much, I've lost sleep over this!

  2. I believe for most drives, dvd+r discs have to be burned before you can id them. That is the case for my burner. I have a Benq 4x burner.

The verbatim dvd+r is MCC. they are very good. I got those discs myself and they all burned without a problem.

  3. Thanks for the info. I'm still upset that I took the Verbatim disc's back. That was a good deal for sure.
