I see this on recorders.
I've come to the conclusion that this "make compatible" function is the reason my IFO files are now screwed up on one of my discs. I have an APEX DRX-9000.
Other discs are fine, and they all play fine in all my players, without any special attention, just eject from the recorder and play.
Anybody know?

I think the make compatible mode is for if you add chapter marks after you are done recording. It basically allows other players to recognize the chapter points that you set with the recorder.
As for why it's screwing up your IFO files? It must be using a "feature" that prevents you from chaning the contents of the IFO file. Kind of like the "feature" in my computer that forces me to reset after I burn a dvd so I can remember to take a cigarette break. (I gotta dump nero.. really really badly) -
lordsmurf,
you got me on this one.
But, how about this.. is there any resources on the "file type" that IFO uses
in order for someone (myself for instance) to open an IFO file and read in
it's contents and see exactly what it is that might be different, in comparison
to a standard IFO file (your files that you say works fine) and see where the
differences are ??
I've ben searching the web for this very same issues (out of curiousity) and
have not ben able to find anything on it.., yet there are people that develop
aps that utilizes these files (ie, IFO, BUP etc)
I'm interested (and curious)

never reqires me to reset, and I even do multiple burn projects.

.
But, I'm using a Nero script that I found on the web, so perhaps that is why ??
I don't know. But, I have no issues, and all my DVD-R's play in my AD-1500 player :P

After I used the "feature" of the player, it also reported my disc only had 1:30:00 on it, whereas it actually had 4:09:00 in the VOB files. It's about 3 hours in difference! The APEX DRX-9000 that made it can play it flawlessly. But anything else, including computer, DVD Decrypter, other players, etc ... all skip over random footage.
Discs made WITHOUT using that "nifty feature" are fine, all report fine, play fine, read by Decrypter fine.
I opened the IFO files in IFO EDIT, but I could not see anything really. It's too complex for me. I was able to rebuild the IFO from the VOB files, but it dumped my menu, which isn't what I wanted either.
So I've used ISOBUSTER to rip the VOB files, using VOB EDIT to strip the M2V and AC3 out, then going to re-author in DVDit! PE ... used TMPGEnc to extract the menu images from the original disc, will look almost identical to the old menu.
"Make Compatible" made a big f-ing mess!
So much for using a recorder to "save time" !!!
At least it's just one. If it does one more of these, thing's going back to the store, and I'm swearing off recorders. Hopefully it just user error (me,) and need to avoid "Make Compatible".
Want to hear the funny part? Apex said it was "compatilizing" the disc when I used that feature. No, not in the dictionary, I checked.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

@ lordsmurf,
FWIW.. have you tried the latest version of IFOedit
http://www.doom9.org/software2.htm
IfoUpdate 0.77 can correct the IFO / BUP length to be 2048 byte aligned and it can transfer VTS_TMAPTI and VTS_VOBU_ADMAP tables that are longer in the newly authored file than the original.
I don't know if it can help, but what the heck, I found it while searching for
other stuff, and thought you might want to check it out anyways.
Good luck, in any event

@vhelp
I don't understand a thing you just said.
But I'll figure it out.Sounds interesting. Thank you.
@PhillipL
That makes sense.
Would you then suggest I just bail on the DVD+RW usage and then use only DVD+R media? At least when I want to perform edits?
Will I still be able go back after a recording and hide chapters (effectively removing commercials) as well as change the menu images? I'm sure I can test this myself, simply trying to not waste a DVD+R for mere testing purposes.
And one more thing still: Is there a way to steal files from the VIDEO_RM folder and augment the VIDEO_TS folder with the more-proper IFO files? Or is it not possible or too complex?
As of right now, it was a copy of a VHS tape, I'm just going to redo it.
Not like me to ask a lot of questions... but this is new stuff for me... don't have all the answers this time... appreciate any response I can get from you.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

DVD+RW Recorder FAQ:
While all of these features are also available for DVD+R discs, the write-once nature of such discs prevents the edits to be recorded in a DVD-Video compatible way, as they need to update the info already written on the disc. This means that the chapter stops you create afterwards, or the chapters you made hidden, will only be visible on the recorder itself. Consider these convient access features for your own use. Chapters stops that are made during recording (by pressing the Edit/FSS key) are DVD compatible and can be used on a DVD-player. -
So essentially a DVD recorder is either a shortcut for capturing raw MPEG/AC3 video or a digital VCR. I can live with that. These machines were just not made for editing.
I'll just add chapters for "editing" and then hit the skip button.
As well as hit up APEX for better firmware.Want my help? Ask here! (not via PM!)

Hi,
I have a Liteon LVW-5001 which record in DVD+RW. I just copy the Video_TS folder to PC and open it with TMPGEnc DVD Author to make chapters and manu and burn to DVD-R. The whole process is only about 40 minutes. Result is very good. No compatability issue.

I've made many +RW discs "compatible" on a Philips recorder. All play fine on my other dvd players - Sony, Apex, and PC.
