  1. i just bought some cheap media discs from compusa, they are compusa brand dvd-r 1 x. nero only allows me to burn at 2x and i keep gettting a power calibiration error. it has the following media code:

    00000000 00 42 00 00 01 40 C1 FD 9E D8 50 00 02 98 0C 13 .B...@....P.....
    00000010 76 78 80 00 03 50 52 49 4E 43 4F 00 04 00 00 00 vx...PRINCO.....
    00000020 00 00 00 00 05 88 80 00 00 00 01 00 00 00 00 00 ................

im guessing its a compusa branded princo. im using herrie's firmware 1.07 latest revision. i will try it with NEC's 1.09 firmware. meanwhile, can anyone tell me about their expieriences with this media and an NEC drive?

I've found that when writing to lesser quality media a "power calibration error" often means that the drive is overheated. Turn off your computer for an hour, then try again.

On an NEC-based drive (like my Plextor, for example), elcheapo media that it doesn't have a write strategy for will often generate "power calibration error" messages.

Example - the spindle of Memorex 4x's I bought thinking they'd be Ricoh but which were instead CMC. Yuk!

The NEC 1300A is a fickle creature. No cheap media. I get RITEK 4x G04's for around $1.00 US delivered. It's not worth messing around with a 25 stack of some cheapo media to save $10.00 after mail in rebate.

I'm serious, zero burning and playback issues with RITEKs. The moment I went TDK (ran out) I had playback issues (stand alone based, not the burner).

It has to do with write strategies, mostly. I think NEC is firmly committed to REFUSING to issue valid write strategies for shit media.

I wish CD burners were like this, then maybe Staples would stop selling crap discs labeled as "Staples Brand CD-R".
