Today, on my downloading of files, I've ben getting some fast D/L
    speeds.

Here is a snap shot of an experience.
Hay, member the Morphieus fast D/L speeds anyone ??

The file I'm D/L'ing is 38mb in size and it's only taking me 1/2 hour versus
two or more that at my tipicle 5k speed

If anything, it's problably due to the type of file it is, a Nero
image file. Maybe we should Image our files when we want to share
    them on the Internet
    I'm gonna try this next time I U/L a sample clip :P

  2. maybe you got a fast downlaod speed because the server you were downloading from was extremely fast but i cant see how an image file has anything to do with the speed increase because 35.8 mb is gonna be the same size no matter what type of file it is.

  3. Yep, it makes no difference what file type it is. The download speed will be the same. You just happen to find a very fast server that was not busy.

If you're on dialup, 24K is good, and, to me, indicates it's an FTP server.

An HTTP more likely would be 5 to 6K, 40 to 48kilobits.

    If you're on cable/DSL, that's bad.

If you're on dialup, is it something like NetZero High Speed? They brag surf up to 5 times faster. Be glad to learn that it works, as 2 of my kids got it since Earthlink bought out our biggest local ISP.

One connects at 38kbps, and I dl'd 3 meg of add ons to her Net Zero, took 1 1/4 hours. With my cable, would have been less than a minute.

    Cheers,

    George

I don't know the actual boost in speed, but the theory behind it makes me think there is some speed boost for certian types of actions.

What they do is have Netzero's servers (which have super fast internet connections) download the webpage and then compress the data before sending it to the end user. The end user's computer then decompresses it. So your actual data transfer rate is no better, but the end result is a modest gain in speed for only certian types of action.

BTW, you can purchase this exact same service from third party vendors if you want to stick with your current dial-up. And it will also work for broadband (but to a much much lesser degree)

That exact same technology is used with the satellite based service providers like Starband. The "accelleration" servers go and fetch the pages you want, and then serve it back to you over the lagging satellite link. This reduces the time it takes to request new packets, and confirm receipt of sent packets. And a good caching server will do so for all protocols, not just the more common ones. This gets satellite into trouble when you start using the binary news groups and IRC, and the P2P networks. It swaps the servers and they find that the bandwidth cost are much too high to continue. So they then throttle things like NNTP and IRC and may not even allow P2P. They are also very picky about you running a server. Uploads take a major amount of bandwidth on the satellite, so they actively scan for servers. They normally call it virus protection/detection :P crock of $#!+ I call it. But satellite is still better than dial-up for many rural users. Absolutely sucks for gamers though!

    Shocker,

What kind of problems are you having with your Comcast?

A couple months back, our Comcast doubled the speed from 1.54 megabits to 3 megabits per second.

    That's 3000kbps, 7 + times your speed.

I have often gotten DL ratings of 220 KBPS from good servers, Redhat, Mandrake, like that, and started multiple DLs, maybe 2nd one is 200, 3rd, 170, 4th, 100, 5th 60, 6th, 20, and as the fastest finished, the throughput increased on the others. This is for 6 and 8 CD ISO images, 4 to 6 Gigs in about 4 to 6 hours.

Norton, too, DLs their updates very quickly.

Try going to toast.net for a speed check on your cable connection.

As to the NetZero hi-speed, does it, then, give better throughput on some of the files? Text is one thing, highly graphical pages are damn slow. Does it help enough to pay the 5 bucks more?

    Cheers,

    George

  9. That 24.1KB/s is like a maxed out 192K connection. If that's cable you must not have the good stuff. My cable connection is 1.5M but it always shows at least 2.5M on toast.net/performance and sometimes over 3M. I just ran the test and it said 2754K.

If you're paying for more than 192K I'd call the company.

    Good luck.

    bottle,

My 24.1k was based on my 56k dialup connection

I don't have all those gagets or whatever those peoples above were talking
about. Just tipicle 56k connect (actually 53k)

I was just D/L'ing a Nero .nrg image file to see what was the quality of the
image that the person was demoing about. It was Paul McCarthy (spelling)
and I think his sister (they looked alike) and a few other people standing,
while some guy was talking. It was Interlaced source. Anyways..
    .
    .
    . . that's all

But, I noticed that my D/L stared at 17k and jumped up to 24.1k and all.
My tipicle D/L speeds are ~5k/sec

It was interesting and brought back some memories of two years ago when
someone posted his/her D/L experience using Morphieus and was getting
whole movies in a hour or so on his/her modem. I also remember giving
my anal theories to - - and it was pretty funny :P

    Vhelp,

Those are fantastic speeds for dialup. Do you have something like NetZero Hi-speed?

    Shocker,

.450mbps is the same thing as your first post. Comcast was originally 1.54 mbps, 3 times your speed, and has supposedly gone to 3 mbps.

You really should go to www.toast.net and run a throughput check. If you are not over 1.5 mbps, complain to your provider. You are getting short changed. If you are on a loop where all your neighbors also have cable, there might be justification for the reduced speed. It is a shared connection, and if they're not alloting enough to that loop, you and your neighbors would all have less than you're paying for.

You really should check this out.

    Cheers,

    George

  13. i think what shocker means is 400-450 KiloBytes/sec.. not kbps..

and no it's not technically possible to get a download rate of 24.1KB/sec on a dial up.

    56.6kbps = 7.075kBps

So it must have been some kind of on the fly compression like when you transfer text files.. either that, or was it a cached file that you had started to download earlier? that can sometime skew results.

And gmatov 3mbps and only getting 220KB/sec.. i'd complain.. i'm typically downloading from fast servers at 325KB/sec and up.

That made me think of something I did one time.

An old friend of mine, he's not with us anymore unfortunately, ask for my help to try and speed up his dialup connection. I went over and did all the normal modem driver update deal then we finally went to Comp-USA and bought him a new modem. When we were finished he had his rate increase and his connection stabilized and was pretty happy.

A couple days later I was working on a new system and during my tests I made a small download. I canceled the download in mid stream, made some system changes, then started it again. The d/l rate jumped up to like 50K and I quickly hit the printscreen button and started smiling. (The d/l just cached from temp) I emailed that screenshot to my old friend. Later I got a message from him asking me to either stop sending him BS or come back over there and make his modem do that.

If that's an honest d/l rate then it's got to be the fastest I've ever seen on 56K.

Don't tell your ISP, they'll want to increase your bill.

    See ya

  15. does print screen really print the screen? i thought it just put a snapshot of the screen on your clipboard.

a few years back a friend was sending me an mp3 through ICQ.. he was on dsl (16k/sec upload) and i was 56k dialup.. at first i was recieving between 5 & 6k/sec, then the speed suddenly jumped up to 16k/sec.. and the mp3 zipped to me really quick, well for being on a 56k modem..

  16. gmatov,

to tell you the truth, i had/ have no clue what i am talking about

nobody i know: school, my fathers work (fiber optics), my house, or friends computers get 1.54megabytes per second.

as i justed checked toast.net right after typing the above, i realize how retarded i am.

the results showed me in at 2781k . the speeds i described were download speeds, obviously limited by any dl server

does all of that sound right?

bits, bytes, its all so damn confusing...what that one guy said a few posts earlier sorta made sense...oh well

i have cable and its fast
    thats all i care about

    Shocker,

Move a decimal 3 places to the left. 2781kbps becomes 2.781mbps. That's megaBITS per second. Divide by 8, you get approx. 350 KiloBytes per second. KBps is KiloBytes, kbps, lower case, is kilobits per second.

You are approaching the doubled speed that Comcast e-mailed about some 3 months ago.

You got a good connection, lad.

Your comment, "Nobody I know..." says 1.54 MegaBytes. If you read back to that post, mine, I said megaBITs. No problem, just a misunderstanding on your part.

Go find something big that you would like to DL, from a fast site, check the DL speed in the DL dialog box. You will be amazed at the speed, probably well in excess of 200 KBps, that's upper case. Norton usually has a very fast server. If you have it, go for an update. Usually in the 12 megabyte range, mere minutes to DL.

You mentioned one time a flavor of Linux. Go to SuSe and dl their bootable CD iso. 600 plus megabytes, and they have a fast server, if I recall. Check your throughput there, truer than the fixed filesize from toast.

    Cheers,

    George

    Tito,

Those speeds were before they went to 3 mbps. I would really expect them to go up now.

I may still have to complain. I went to toast myself, to see what I am now, and my numbers are worse than they were then.

I may have picked the wrong server to test from.

BTW, anyone who does try toast, they used to tell you to empty your Temp Internet Files folder, or you would load from cache, get fantastic numbers. Don't think they tell you that anymore.

Have to try the other free servers.

    Cheers,

    George

you can always do a test to rule this out, buy renameing that same file you
just D/L'ed (at the assume lightning speed) and see if that hapens again.
If it doesn, then it wasn't a cached/temp file that it remembered, but rather
a better compression/decompression method used during that D/L.
    .
    .
On the tune of compression.. I think that there are some good compression
going on inside these modems, but the problem may be secret that
ISP'ers knew about for a long time, but didn't want you to know, cause it
would interfeere w/ their plans to to ISDN and then DSL and then Cable etc
etc. Maybe they thought that they would keep it a secret and just
jump over it, w/ these other Internet gadgets.. fraid that we would all settle
    w/ 24.1k for instance I know I would've.
    .
    .
I'm thinking that this particular experinece was a fluke by chance, because
it my be a personal server that this guy is running and has be VERY WELL
TUNED !! "..screw those b'stards, I'm given them compression like they
    were soppose to get.."

well, you all get the picture. If I can get 24.1k (did go up a few) why can't
we get it w/ other expierneces or files or whatever ??

So, was it the Nero Image, the compression, combo of both, or something

In the day when DOS was all there was, we used the print screen key to 'print the screen' on our 9pin dot matrix printer. We thought that was some really neat stuff man!....

Ah, fond memories of loading programs into High Memory, and using Mem Manager. The wondrous range of commands spanning from the simple "dir" to the exciting "cd". And the sensation of being immerged in a multimedia extravaganza as the computer screen flashed in all 16 colors and went beep!
