Due to my motherboard packing up, I had to buy a new one. So I bought a Soyo Dragon KT400 ultra, which meant I had to buy a new CPU and RAM. I bought 512Megs of Corsair PC3200, which took up most of my budget, so I had to buy a cheapo Duron 1300 CPU, and keep my old graphics card.
Anyway, I got some games for xmas, (prince of persia/star wars knights and so on) but my machine is too puny to play them
So, I pretty much know what I need, a faster CPU and a better graphics card, but which do I get first? What will make the most impact on my games?
BTW, my graphics card is an ancient RAGE 128Pro 32Mb AIW.
Bearing mind I need an AIW for capturing!

    Thanks

  2. Well for games it is mainly your graphics card that is used for the processing so in your case you will want the graphics card upgraded first. A good card at a relatively good price I would say the radeon 9600/pro, the AIW version is only slightly more expensive but the 9600 is a great card. (I have a 9600XT but sadly no AIW version).

Mind you, I don't really know what would be better for a duron pc since it does not have a great deal of power but my p3 system ran games a lot better with simply a new graphics card. Remember that your overall setup will determine how well the games run so a new gfx card will run them better than the one you have just now but it probably might not run as well as you would like until you upgrade your cpu. You have corsair RAM which is really good so that will give you a boost.

  3. I'd give your processer the boot and get something with a bit more va va voom....At least you are giving yourself a better starting point.
Prices from under £40.. for a XP 1900 Here and if you search around you could proberly find better prices.

OK, then, 1 vote to change the graphics card, and 1 to change the CPU
I had a quick look around for prices, and I picked what I want......
I think I'll spend the money I have now on a serious CPU, with va va voom as you say so I've decided on an XP3000+(333fsb), which is the fastest my board can take according to Soyo's website.
Then I'll start saving for a new AIW card, maybe the 9600 as pixel suggested.

BTW, is it worth getting more RAM? i.e. will 1024 make much of a difference over my 512?

    Cheers guys

512 is fine, you will not notice much difference, if any, going from 512 to 1024.

If you got the money to spend on ram buy the graphics card as well instead..

There is another post somewhere on this board about 512 or 1024 and wheter its worth it..
