I have been using CladDVD to Rip to Hard Drive and then DVDx to convert to .mpg for a VCD or SVCD on my standalone DVD player.
Here is my question. I would like to Rip the files off the DVD to the hard drive and then convert them to .avi so I can use Panasonic or any other encoder to encode my movie to .mpg for better quailty. So my question is how do I convert the VOB's to avi?? Thanks very much!!!

Actually converting to avi first won't help the quality. And an uncompressed AVI of a DVD rip will take 75~100GB. Instead:
1) Rip DVD
2) Use DVD2AVI to generate D2V (video) and wav (audio) file
3) Apply the VFAPI codec to the D2V to make 'fake' avi (it's really a linked/frameserve file to the VOB files) you should be able to load/encode the VFAPI AVI.
Aside - TMPGenc reads D2V files, VDub read VFAPI AVI, CCE best to make an avisynth script w/ mpeg2dec and mpegsource(d2v). -

Got ya---but cant I compress the .avi down to a smaller size? How do I do that. Also I want to use Panasonic MPEG Encoder. I have had the very best results with that encoder!! -
You missread Vejita-sama's post. There is no use for a temporary avi file. Just follow his steps.
If you want to create a avi file by all means, convert the dvd2avi project with VFAPI (2 hours= about 500KB) and open that in VirtualDub. Have a look at the guide. Beware, don't use DivX codecs, if you plan to convert it later to MPEG. Use MJPEG or Huffyuv instead and save as segmented avi. -
Ok--I think everybody has the wrong idea what I want to do. In plain English---Convert the ripped DVD to compressed .avi format to play on my computer to take up minimal space. Also just in case down the road I want to convert it to .mpg. I just dont know what program to use and how to convert it to .avi from the vob's ripped off of the DVD. Thanks very much for all the answers!!! Bill

The very nature of AVIs is that they're big files, even compresed ones don't get much smaller. The only ones that I've ever seen that were manageable were either very short (seconds), very small (less than even NTSC), or were cut down to about 10-12 FPS...and about NTSC size. The result of this is that playing on your computer would make for very grainy, choppy video, just on the off-chance that later you'd want to make a (bad quality) MPG out of it.

Everything is answered in the replies above. If you have no clue, what is dvd2avi or VirtualDub and how to work with it, have a look at the "how to.." section.

Ok---How do people make make DVD rips on the internet sites like Edonkey and Morpheus to an .avi file like 600-1000 MB????? Thats what I would like to do.
Thanks again all!!! -
Ok, what you want to do is create a divx (.avi) file. You won't find that here as this site is dedicated to making .mpg files. I suggest you go to http://www.divxdigest.com and use their guides.
