  1. i have tried several times to use clonedvd / dvd2one / or a 321 product and using the dvd-rom as the source, rather than using decrypter to pre-rip the source material i am backing up. i am running anydvd 3007 in the background.

each time i have done this, the computer abruptly reboots. what could be causing this?

    DVD-rom is lieton XJHD166
    DVD+RW is plextor PX708A

jumpers on both drives are set to cable select (as dell had my original equipment out of the factory)

    Something wrong with your system?

It's not the drives, and it's not the programs. It could be your memory, your OS, or a million other things.

Are you using any external hardware (i.e. USB hard drives, DVD-ROM)? I've seen systems that have faulty USB ports reboot spontaneously when data is being sent to or from the device. Just an idea...

  4. there are external usb devices (scanner, printer, wireless mouse & keyboard, ATI video card remote control receiver) but none of those items is used during DVD-type operations.

I'd stress-test your system with a good burn-in program like Sandra.

  6. Look in the "event viewer" to see if you can figure out which .exe or .dll is causing the reboot. Micr$oft and their infinite wisdom makes your computer reboot instead of blue screen on certain types of errors. I think there is a way to disable that behavior (make it blue screen instead) but it has been awhile since I looked into it.

Stop rebooting in XP: Control Panel>System>Advanced>Startup and Recovery>Settings> Then uncheck reboot. Anyway, without reboot you will get a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) which may give you a cryptic message only Microsoft can understand.
