When I first started doing video editting I was creating VCD's. Now I got a powerbook with a Superdrive. I would like to convert all my VCD disks to DVD. Is this possible?

I purchased ffmpegX to do this. But on when I click the VCD->DVD button it cannot read the VCD disk I have in my drive. It seems like it is looking for a mpeg file and the VCD disk doesn't have any mpeg files. It has three folders called CDI, MPEGAV and VCD. The CDI & MPEGAV have files that end with .DAT and the VCD file has two files that end with .VCD.

Any help will be very much appreciated.

you will need ffmpegx but more for converting the audio to dvd spec than anything else

there is a turorial on mywebsite that will help you through that.
    http://webpages.charter.net/ernsta/SVCD2DVD.htm

It also works for VCD its just that the dvd will have mpeg1 files not mpeg2

once you get to step 5 use Sizzle to compile the disk image

ill have the complete updated with sizzle tutorail up by tomorrow hopefully!

  4. You can save space an time by authoring the VCD material to a DVD. Almost all players will play MPEG-1 1150kbps 352x240 23.946fps or 29.97fps Video and MPEG-1 Layer 2 224kbps 44100Hz audio, off a DVD.

edit : I did not read previous posts. sorry if i repeated what was already said.

As an alternative you could use Galactica's method Step 1
    Step 1: Converting VCD/SVCD Disc to Disc-Images

    then

Step 2: put all your .bins in a folder (around 4GB worth)

    Step 3: Use ffmpegX's s/vcd>dvd feature.

It extracts, demuxes, reencodes audio, muxes all the videos and builds Video_TS folder ready for burning.
Its slick, but you don't get any fancy menus.

    Step 4: burn using Toast

Stellar! I'd completely overlooked this feature of ffmpegX. I've got a bunch of CVDs I encoded from some TV series, and wanted to put them on DVD-Rs now that the price has come down. I won't tell you the cockeyed method I was using, except that it required more software & a heck of a lot more user intervention. While I like spiffy menus, too (excellent guide, Galactica), this is just what I need for batch conversion. Thanks for the tip!

  9. Thanks galactica for the conversion guides.

However, what if I know 'from the beginning' I want to put a bunch of SVCD-quality stuff on one DVD? I have a bunch of broadcast shows that are each like 40 mins without commercials.

i.e. I havent made any of the SVCD bins/images yet, but have them all as MPEGAs on my hard drive?

Is there some streamlined process I can use with these apps to not waste time making all of the SVCD bins/images, just to then spend more time in the rename/convert to DVD process?

sure... just skip ahead to the point where you have mpeg's in the tutorial

if you have them already there is no point in making a .bin/.cue then ripping the mpegs out of it!

    make since?!

  11. I think it makes sense - but I have MPEG-As (720x480, 29.97 fps, 48 khz, 1536 kbps) coming in via hollywood DV bridge.

Even if I rename to give them an .mpg extension (which ffmpegx demands), ffmpegx just dings immediately and says done when I click demux - with no demuxed files created.

So it seems I still need to run a pass through to make mpeg-2s?

    try another demuxing app perhaps?!

  13. Neither ffmpegx nor bbdemux will demux my file. Not sure why. Dropping it on ffmpegx gives the details I noted above (MJPEG-A, 29.97 fps, etc).

    Am I doing something wrong?

The log of bbdemux says it found 0 streams (yet tried to demux it anyway).

MJPEG-A is NOT MPEG (it is a codec where each frame is encoded as a jpeg - this is good for editing because you can acess every frame)

You need to use ffmpegx to encode your files as DVD.. You can just use a preset.
I would use the DVD high bitrate because you already have full size source. (if you really want svcd quality, use the DVD lo bitrate preset.)

  15. thanks for that clarification.

ok, so lets try this whole thing again.

I have some broadcast (satellite) source stuff that I want to put several hours worth of on DVD, and have a dazzle H-Bridge for input.

When I first save it on my mac, what format should I use and which program? I have been using myVCR to save as MJPEG-A. what should I use instead to get an MPEG source saved - and then proceed with galactica's instructions to use sizzle/etc to put multiple 'SVCD type' sources on one DVD?

I am trying to avoid the current "35-step process" for each 45 minute program - there has to be an easier way!

Does this dazzle H-Bridge offer any other options for importing?
If it isn't broken, take it apart and find out why.

  18. Galactica to say on your SVCDTODVD that after you have used toast to save it to your hd you've to change the movie.toast to movie.bin but If change the .toast to .bin it becomes to movie.toast.bin and After using vcdtoolsx to ectrat the mpeg file yoy only get a empty movie file.

Some how that is possible. i have a SVCD on cdr

    not .toast.bin
erase .toast and replace it with .bin you should get a message from the OS saying Are you sure you want to change to .bin and a yes change to .bin or leave as .toast option. Choose CHANGE TO .BIN

    example
    mymovie.toast
    change to mymovie.bin

    not mymovie.toast.bin

  20. Thats the weird thing in this converting I do as you say.I delete .toast and then type .BIN but the strange thing you OS ask you if you want to change the extension .But by me on my Imac panther 10.3.2 It does not

And about that I change the file name It realy becomes .toast.bin It doesnot metter what I do!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok i have this .toast file. I click and drag over the name to rename it. I erase ALL of the name and call it MYSVCD.bin instead. As soon as i push return this message appears.

It should! if not then something is wrong.
Then i click USE .bin and BOOM its now a .bin and the icon has changed to reflect it.

Just for fun try this with a text file and see if it works also
Open Text Edit, save the file as UNTITLED to your desktop
Locate UNTITLED and then rename it to untitled.doc this will pull up the same menu and choose USE .doc. the icon should change to a msword icon if you have msword installed.

Either way you need to get it to .bin otherwise it wont extract!

  22. I have tried with TEXt EDIT but same thing happens t does not ask me if I am sure to change it. But It used to be.

But to change movie.toast to movie.BIN i used capitals and it worked. I always thougt that it didnot matter
