Hello. I have successfully converted many AVI's to MPG using Gary's fool-proof guide as well as others. I use Virtual Dub to extract the audio and then use TMPGEnc to encode. I currently have two avi files that using batch encoding were to make three MPG files. The first half of one of the AVI file returns returns "invalid pointer operation" and stops, the second half of that same file encodes fine.

    Please advise.

    Happy new year.

  2. You can try several things:

Make sure in 'Environmental settings' that DirectShow is at the top of the list and 'Vfapi ' below it.

I would completely uninstall the reinstall the program first if this isn't a problem in case a file is missing. Of course, always restart the system afterwards. The settings above may fix your problem alone. If you still have this problem with that one file than it sounds like you need to check out the file. Virtualdub is common at checking for errors but unsuccessful some of the time. The first thing I do is load the file into videofixer http://www.video-fixer.com . Then click 'check' and if there is an error, believe me it WILL find it. 99% of the time this program can fix the problem correctly but keep 'auto backup' checked in case. If it cannot fix the file then assume there is an error(since it found one) and try to fix it with another program. At least the presence of an error would prove that it isn't TmpGenc.

Hope this helps, it's all I know so far.
