  1. Ok, I went to Lordsmurf's site to look around.

Since I have an ATI AIW card, I wanted to try the macrovision hack to see if it worked on my system.

I downloaded the small RAR file with 3 .exe programs in it. I checked for virus like a diligent little boy. I then tried the one mr lord suggested....no luck so I tried another and it didn't seem to work either.

So I moved on to other things.

Shortly afterward, when I tried to use window's explorer it froze....locked up the system and I had to reset. Now, whenever I try to use window explorer it freezes. I can open the 1st screen with the c-drive, desktop, etc. but if I click on My Computer within explorer I get the searchlight looking for what is apparently the impossible dream.

On and on, no luck with explorer....and if i try the My Computer icon the same result. I have Re-installed W98SE (yeah...I know....stone age), just an install over the existing OS and it has no effect (except to eat up 30 minutes of my life). If I boot-up in safe mode then I can access all my hard drives. I've done a step-by-step confirmation, searched google for and answer, and have also tried profanity in many combinations....no luck.

I am of course hoping that somebody has a solution to this dilemna that won't involve me wiping everything out, reformatting the drive and starting over.....and seeing if I can find my way back to where i was before this fateful morning.

Since you can boot into safe mode and everything is ok then I think it could be the AIW graphic driver. When windows boots into safe mode it doesn't use the AIW driver but a generic one. I would try going into safe mode then uninstalling the AIW drivers from there so when you boot up normally it should detect your card and install it or ask you for a driver CD.

mmasw...try the file labeled "DisableATIMacrovisionDetection.zip" from Lordsmurf's rar file...I also have an ATI AIW 128 and have used this hack under WIN98 and WINXP with ZERO problems...I have never tried the other two hacks, so I have no experience with them...but try this one, and see what you think

I don't know. Sounds odd to me.

What was this: "So I moved on to other things. "

That may be the key moreso than the hack itself.

The hack only distorts the MV drivers, not the other ATI drivers, so what is being suggested (corrupt video/graphics drivers) is not really all that possible.

atinmdxx.sys is what is patched , and the patcher leaves a backup
with "ORI" extension. Just put it back.
....unless there is a new one I don't know about
