Hi there
I have just started in this world of avi to DVD and i use Nero 6 to convert and burn it... I know you all use TMPGENC but i tried it and found it all very, very complicated, and i have read many useful guides.
Now, with Nero, it takes about 6 hours but i don't mind, it is simple.
The problem i have is that it comes out very quiet, it is just about ok with the sound on full blast on the TV... is there any way to cure this?
Also, many films are apparantly DVD-9 and nero won't burn it, Now, these files are only fractionally over the 4.7GB limit and i am sure with just a little compression, they would fit fine.. at the moment i am splitting everything which seems stupid!!!
Any ideas friends![]()
Thanks

re: conversions with Nero.
I don't know of any way to increase the volume, but I'd say you're running into Noob Problem #1 - going for an all-in-one solution.
most of the "we do it all" software fail in some area - I love Nero as a burner, but I would never use it to do anything but burn. That's what it was originally built to do, and all this other crap gets bolted on later.
you will be much happier in the long run if you learn the use of dedicated software for each step, rather than a one-button solution.
as for DVD's that aren't much bigger than a single layer (dvd-5), I would recommend DVD Shrink - easy, free, and you can discard stuff you don't want (French audio track, for example) and compress stuff like the menus and trailer to make more room for the movie. If you're lucky, there will be just enough stuff you don't care about that you can remove or compress down a ton, and you won't have to compress the movie at all!
good luck. check the Guides section at left for more info.- housepig

Ok Thanks.
But does anyone know of a simple simple guide?
Or why the sound is always sooo quiet?

You need to give us more specs???
Where have the AVIs come from? (Captured via Capture Device from VHS, TV or Ripped from DVD, etc)
Is the sound tooo low on the AVI, or just on the final produced DVD. Is it tooo low on multiple players (may need to visit a friend to test more than what you have...)Cendyne/Pioneer 105 & 104 with a Dazzle* Hollywood DV-Bridge. -
The AVI's came from Kazaa and other download places, the sound is fine when i play it on my PC but when i burn it to a DVD and then play it on a DVD player, the sound on the TV has to be turned to full volume almost!!!
I have tried this on about 3 DVD players now and it always the same.
Any ideas? -
I would try another product like Tmpgenc (even though you said you had tried it and it was tooo complicated). Or you can try any Authoring tool that accepts AVIs and see if the sound is an issue. If the new Encoding or Authoring SW solves the problem, you know it was the old SW. If everything seems to be a problem, then it is your source files, as you had no control how they were produced by their originator.

If you are more than happy with the way your DVD looks after encoding with Nero here's a relatively simple solution for your audio problems. Before you burn with Nero, open up your AVI with Virtualdub.
1. Under the Video menu select "Direct Stream Copy".
2. Under Audio menu select "Full Processing mode".
3. Under audio, select 'Volume" and check it off and adjust the slider to around 300-400 percent.
4. You will then need to select the type of audio compression. Go with Mpeg-layer 3 at 160kb. You can skip the last step if you want but your output file will be more than twice the size of your original video.
5. Finally, under File select "Save As AVI" and pick your file name. Wait a few minutes for your new file to be created and then use that to burn in Nero instead of your original file.
