Ok, I just captured some video from my DV Cam using a FireWire cable. When I play back the video, whenever anything moves it looks like this.
Is that to be expected or a problem with my capture software?

Somebody else seemed to have a similar problem to yours with a Canon Camcorder.
Assuming that the lines appear with whatever player you are using
Still investigating the reason but I suspect it may be an incorrect interpretation of the filed orders. Could you check that your capture settings indicate bottom firld first.
The other thing to check is that your capture settings are all on interlaced. -
It is interlaced video. What you see is normal. If you plan to encode it to watch on television, then you have nothing to worry about. Search the forums and you should find more info on interlaced and de-interlaced videos.

I guess I assumed you had problems when playing the video on your TV. If it is only on your computer, proggy is right, this comes from the fact that the video is interlaced and some media players do not handle it very well.
