  1. I'm trying to backup a Region 3 DVD on my imac. When I put the DVD it obviously doesn't let me play it as my Mac is Region 2 (I'm in UK) and I don't know how to make my Mac multi-region. Is this possible?

Anyway I put that message to the back and don't eject the DVD. As normal I drag and drop the DVD into DVDBackup 1.3 and then start processing the files. It lasts about 30 seconds and then I get the message:

    File System Error

Error in processing file'VTS–01_0.VOB'. Continue processing other files or stop now?

If I press continue I keep getting the same message and I know it wouldn't be good to continue any way.

Do I need to make my Mac multi-region?

Please help - thanks in advance.

    no
just use VLC to view the dvd like you would in dvd player

vlc is region free and it will also do the same thing as the preview in dvd player you have to do before you back up a disk

  3. Sorry for my ignorance but what is VLC? and where can I get it from?

and when I put a DVD in my drive it automatically starts playing in DVD player even if I have this option turned off? How do I stop DVD player playing DVD's?

    1. you can just quit the dvd player
    2. you can turn off the auto open by going to
    SYSTEM PREFERENCES/HARDWARE/CD&DVD

when you insert VIDEO DVD you can set it to OPEN OTHER APPLICATION and then choose VLC for that.

    make since?

you will have to preview the dvd in VLC first before you back it up.
just open vlc and have it OPEN DISC and choose the DVD.

play each chapter a few seconds. when done quit VLC.
open dvd backup and then backup the dvd.

then proceed to the rest as described in my website.

  6. OK - I've just started to back it up after changing my region code to 3 as I was desperate - I thought that there was some info on the DVD preventing it from backing up so thats why I went down this route. But it seems to be backing up fine while I type.

I'll change it back to region 2 and then try and back up another r3 DVD. The reason why I Changed it was because I couldn't see the DVD mounted. I hope I will be able to see the DVD after using your methods. I'll see if I can do it after I've backed up this DVD.

Once again thanks for your help!!!

As I said I hope I can see the DVD when it's mounted as I couldn't see it before. I'm new to OSX and I appreciate letting me know how to turn off automatically playing a DVD.

    no problem

you only get 5 times to change that region code, so WHAT EVER YOU DO make sure the 5th time is yoru region!

thats why VLC is so great. its region free

ive never had problems mounting "non-my-region" discs so im not sure why thats happening to you

either way sounds like your on a roll now

  8. Just to make sure you don't have to hack your DVD drive try doing it this way:

    1. Insert Region 3 DVD into your Region 2 drive.
    2. Play a few seconds of the movie in VLC. This will allow DVDBackup to verify the CSS keys which unscramble the movie for playback.
    3. Back up the disc with DVDBackup. Selecting New Region:Region Free or Region 2 if you wish.
    4. Use DVD2OneX to shrink the movie to fit on 1 DVD, or whatever method you use.
    5. Burn in Toast
    6. Explain that strange Irish sport of hurling to me. So it's rugby with big sticks?!?

    Cheers,

As far as I know RegionX only works if you have already hacked your drive's firmware (so you're shit outta luck if you have one of the new drives with encrypted firmware).

    I wouldnt go that route

how easy is it to just use VLC and not have to "hack" a drive at your own risk

    VLC is RISK FREE!

  14. Cheers, but I'm not going to risk using 'RegionX' as I'm quite happy using 'VLC'. No need for anything else now except a large external hard-drive.
