avi to mpeg (get audio but no video)

Hi all I am new to this task but am trying really hard to burn a avi movie. from what i understand from the faq and forum is i need it to be a mpeg which i did using TMPGEnc but when i try to play it i get no picture only audio. Is there something i missed in the directions or could i just be using a bad avi file. or am i going completely the wrong direction. please HELP!!!!!

Do you try to play it with a software player or a standalone dvd player? How did you encode, I mean, what are your encoder settings?
You are right, if you want to create a (S)VCD, you have to encode to MPEG. If you just want to watch it on PC, DivX might be better.

i am trying to play on a standalone player
i believe it is nstc but im not sure what should i be using.
my dvd player says it does not support pal and from what i can tell from the org avi the video frame rate is 12.5 frames per second (i believe this is the fps?)the data rate is 44kb/sec any and all help is appreciated
