Should I be making sure it plays SVCD or notOr something else would make it easier to play my own cd's?? I have had zero luck making cd's work on my present machine (Hitachi P725U)

If you plan on making SVCD's and VCD's then definitely make sure the new player supports these formats. You can probably find a player for well under $100 that will even play mp3 discs as well. It wouldn't hurt to check the recordable DVD compatibility too.
