When burning files to a CDROM for the purpose of backup, what order does the system put them in? I can't find anything in the software to indicate how it does it. I am currenlty using Adaptec(Roxio) CD creator.

I am asking because I have backed up some mpeg files files to disk and put them into a specific order. I can then play this disk on my DVD player and it plays the files in the order they are on the disk. But the order they play is different than the order I specified. I know it is a dumb question, but I have always wondered how it determines the order on a data CD.

I hope this doesn't sound like a stupid answer but files are burned by their alpha-numeric file names. Names begining with numbers are first. At least that's how they always turn out for me.

I don't know about other programs, but with Nero, when I make a compilation, no matter what order I drag and drop, it sets them in order, alphabetic and numeric.

Don't really know if they are written that way, but if you explore the contents of the disk, naturally they'll come up in order.

  4. When you burn a Data disc they will always be organized first numerically then alphabetically. There are two ways around this:
    1.Make a S/VCD
2.Add a number in front of the file ex:01_xxx.mpg,02_xxx.mpg,etc.

  5. if you rip it to your hard drive rename the file in the order such as.

    Track01
    Track02
    Track03

and so on if you want the right sequence. usually wav file that uses names instead of numbers is burn in alphabetical order from my experience.

This may not be what you are trying to do but:
I have convinced most of family members to name family photos with this syntax 4dig yr2digmoday discription text.extension
example: 20031225 Dennis Shannon Brady xmas.jpg

most of use use a program called piestudio which among other things will auto inport from source and rename according to a templete you set.
This puts all the photos in order by date on the pc as well as cd/dvd

also makes it easy to search pc for pics in a time frame or by person if that is included in description text
