    I have camcorder tapes (standard/hi8)
Via my hi8 sony camcorder, i've transfered 1.5hrs worth onto pc with premier. it comes out as an avi file which im assuming is digital (my sony manual says that it converts analogue recorded tapes to digital before outputting too). I assume that my next step is to convert that avi file into a mepg2 format (which from ive gleamed so far is better than standard mepg and fine for use in most dvd players?)

I tried doing this using some software which i downloaded for free called TMPGE. It said that i could proceed but conversion would take more than 8 hours..

Finally (on a five minute sample only) i did convert an avi file to this mpeg but my nero didnt accept it as a valid format!!

can someone enlighten me as to whether or not im on the right tracks!!

    thank you in advance!

That's probably because it has not been authored yet.

Steps to making a dvd from avi. (simply put)
    1. Convert avi to mpeg2 with program of your choice
    2. author mpeg2 with program of your choice
    3. burn to dvd with program of your choice

Some programs can do all 3 with out the need for any other software.

Good luck, and try reading some guides. You will be surprised that most of the time you can answer your own questions.
