I don't normally like to pay out on someone because they posted a silly question but this one from carmaster troubles me. Not only were they able to locate the right forum but they were also able to locate this site. That in itself would have required some sort of research, so why not go one more step and look in the howto section?
<soapbox>
Personally I think too many people have access to computers these days. Sure, you have to start somewhere but a lot of people are using computers because they are there and everyone else has one (same thing can be said about cars.....but that's a different rant for a different forum). I know people who bought a CD burner because that's what they "had" to do or it came with the PC, yet they have no clue when it comes to CD burning....what are they going to to with a DVD burner? Unless you want to learn how to use a DVD burner, don't get one......and by learn I mean research...don't expect it to be handed to you.
</soapbox>
Having said that, let me suggest one word....DVDShrink. If you want to know more look to your left or go to www.google.com.

@jw33-
no it isn't impossible. I have a friend who has a neighbor who got a new computer for Christmas with a DVD burner and his cousin came down from New York and brought his roommate from college and they all did it, so it must be possible! -
When i got my first dvd burner in october this year i came here and read all the available guides top to bottom and when i was finished i was burning my backups merrily along with success and no need for any further help.Did the same procedure when i got my first cd burner in 1999
and i used www.google.com then for any unclear questions.Never really had to ask for any advice by reading and researching. -
Amen...
I mean if you are too lazy or not willing to read a guide on the process then why not save the $700 you paid for your new DELL and just pay someone $5.00 to back up your DVD's for you. I mean that's 140 backups.
When I first started, I read guide after guide, tried several processes, burned to DVD-RW until I got it figured out and any posts were about a specific issue in the process and I could speak about it with some degree of intelligence or at least a clue of what people were telling me.
Just coming to the forum and asking without doing any research to help yourself is unexceptable and any help offered would be an exercise in futility. Because with absolutely no knowledge of the process what so ever, any advice or directions are not going to be understood. Which is the same reason they don't teach Calculus before algebra...there is a base line of knowledge required and it takes some effort on the learner's part.
Along the lines of this subject, I was in office max the other day and this guy was in there getting ready to buy a DVD burner and while talking to the store worker I heard him say I want to copy some of my DVD's and then he said "can I just put in a DVD like "Shrek" and copy it like I copy music CD's?" to which the guy working there said "sure I don't see why not." I felt the need to interject before this guy spent that much money and said "well one reason you can't do that is because DVD movies like shrek are usually over 4.7 GB and a DVD-R disc will only hold 4.7 GB" I went on to tell the guy the process and some of the things involved, wrote down this website and doom9.net for him told him to read the guides, told him about the variety of software he would need, etc. He ended up deciding to wait to buy the burner and do some more research before making the purchase. So that was my good deed for the year but it just goes to show how ignorant some people are concerning this process even ones that are that close to computers everyday. (and don't get all bent because I said "ignorant", if you are offended grab a dictionary and look it up, we are all ignorant about something) -
I love these posts...they're so funny to read.
Seriously, stop adding useless comments. Its on its way to becoming one of those 200-reply argument posts which end up just getting deleted. So stop it. Sheesh

Is there any way to burn dvds that are copyrighted, by removing the copyright or using software?
How do u burn a dvd that is 7gb big???
DISCLAIMER: Be warned that bypassing CSS encryption is illegal in some countries and could result in criminal prosecution against you. I am not advocating that you do it only pointing out that it can be done.
This disclaimer releases me from any liability in your using any of these tools or procedures to bypass any laws that may exist forbidding their distribution or use in your home country.
Now I feel safer!8)
1) You cannot remove a "copyright" since that would be stealing. Most material on a DVD is partially if not wholly copyrighted. Even after you copy a disc the material on it will still be copyrighted by the original owner. You can circumvent copy protection like CSS encryption if that's what you meant and you can also remove copyright logos and displays imbedded with the movie. There are programs called DVD rippers which are used for this purpose. One example is Smartripper but there are many others that you will find in the tools section or the ripping section.
2) Obviously 7gig won't go into 4 gig unless you do something. You can split the movie to 2 discs. Most people don't like that option. You can use a tool like DVDSHRINK (there are other tools this is one example) which allows you to remove some excess material and/or compress the movie so that it will fit on 1 disc. -
Oh hell, it's been fun, but all he meant was "can copy protection be removed". Not copyright. He just didn't know the right terminology. Carmaster, the answer is, yes of course. But you need to know what is legal and what is not, and you need to do some homework.
So please don't take offense, the people here aren't really malicious. You want to know the whys and wherefores of burning DVDs? THIS PLACE IS IT! There are many genuine experts here, and you have to admire them for the effort they've put into learning how to handle video and computers.Pull! Bang! Darn! -

As I always say, I'm amazed at the number of people that somehow learned how to write without ever having learned how to read.

I am having a probem with my new DVD burner - i am using some TDK DVDs that people here were talking about as really good - the first side is burning really good, with no errors, but the B side on EVERY disk is showing as unreadable - is this something other people have had happen - maybe a bad batch? I got them from Meritline, and I heard they are selling low grade media, so maybe they ripped me off? Seems very suspicious that every DVD has the same problem...

I wanted to know to remove copyright protection. Because my friend made a copy of his wedding from his dvd camcorder and he put copyright protection on it. I wanted to copy that wedding dvd, so i can have a copy for my family. That's all. I never wanted to copy illegal movies or whatever. That wasn't my intention.
-
My friend gave me permission to copy his wedding dvd. But he doesn't seem to know how to remove the copy protection, that's why I asked. I would never ever copy illegal material without permission.
-
I think your friend has been fibbing
There was a recent topic on home users adding copy protection to DVDs and the conclusion was that it can't be done without spending vast amounts of $ only for it to be defeated by a free ripper.
You should have no problem copying it, but just to be on the safe side, rip with DVDdecrypter to HD before burning.Regards,

Oh hell, it's been fun, but all he meant was "can copy protection be removed". Not copyright. He just didn't know the right terminology. EXACTLY THAT'S WHAT I MEANT, I'M NEW TO DVD TERMINOLOGY.
Thanks for everyone's response. -
Well, well, some folks seem to have jumped to conclusions.
Please accept my apologies.

carmaster:
My blue and red comments earlier were thruthful but partially in jest. Everyone is responsible for their actions and shoudn't blame someone else if the law comes calling. Most of us are using an interpretation of the law in many jurisdictions when we back up DVD movies that we own. It's called "FAIR USE". The problem is that in some lands the fair use provision goes against another ruling which says that you cannot legally circumvent CSS encryption on DVD discs. There is the dilemna, do we or do we not have the right to back up our own property? User "x" may say yes but you have to make up your own mind. This way you won't blame anyone on DVDRhelp if something happens.
My feelings are that everyone should be forewarned in the same way I warned you. If authorities in your country disagree that fair use is a valid argument then it will be little consolation that we are on your side when the law comes calling on you and you must stand alone.
I don't speak for this site and no one can or wants to monitor private actions, but unacceptable activities here would include such things as, trying to copy DVD discs that you do not own such as rented or borrowed discs and making DVD movies of downloaded movies that you do not own.
On the other hand, time shifting of TV/cable/satellite signals and converting them to another medium including DVD, are seen as acceptable practices, provided that it is for your personal use. There is no need to entertain us with the ideas of someone adding copy protection to home video's because that's an expensive commercial licensing exercise used with pressed discs and you are dealing with an educated and aware audience. There are other so called copy protection schemes but these too have been discussed here many times before.
My point:(Finally)!!
If you own the DVD and feel that "fair use" grants you the right to backup your property for personal use then by all means feel free to ask your questions. You may take a bit of ribbing by some at times but a good sense of humour is a great asset here. :P
In time you will gain experience, help others and do some teasing of your own.

Suit yourself. Responses varied from somewhat helpful to teasing to nasty to preachy. All without knowing what the guy was getting at. I prefer to let out a little more rope before I decide.
A sympathetic question can draw out someone who's bogus. Start attacking and all you'll get from then on is lies. Too, there's always the possibility the questioner is simply confused or ignorant.
So which is it:
1) He's another too dumb to live noob, or
2) He knew what he was asking, alrightPull! Bang! Darn!
