I have looked and burned many coasters, and spent 1 to many dollars on some blank DVD's. I have a v7 PS2 (and of course a modchip).

Some might recognize me from past posts on the problem I have had. I have borrowed a new HP DVD+R Burner from a friend and don't want to spend money on DVD+R's that will not work.

So bottom line... What does my v7 PS2 support?

    DVD-R
    DVD+R
    DVD-RW
    DVD+RW
    *Or all of the above?

    Thanks for any help!!

P.S. Fast posts will help alot, but take your time if you need to. I'm in no rush... but it would relief alot of tension if I finally got one working!

  2. i used to have a v7, it would boot dvd-r & dvd+r with games ONLY.

    but dvd+r/w & dvd-r/w worked for movies.

    ???

Well anyways, I am one happy person. I finally got not only 1 movie, but 2 movies working on my PS2.

**I burned "Holes" on a HP DVD+RW disc, and it booted up perfect. (Ripped by DVD Shrink and burned with RecordNow Max)

**I also burned "Christmas Story" On a Memorex DVD-R. (Read and write with Dvd Decrypter)

I think my problem is the the software I use. I used to burn movies with Instant DVD/CD and it didn't work.

    *******NOW MY REAL PROBLEM*******

--But about my GAME problem.. I'll try ripping at 1x with RecordNow MAX, then burning at 1x. (On a Verbatim DVD-R)

Does it sound like a plan? PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!!

If not, then I will try getting DVD+R's and burning on the HP Burner.

  5. +r or -r worked on my v7 for games.. i had shitloads of problems with memorex dvd-r's (for movies & ps2 games), so i ditched those quickly and went with high quality stuff.. verbatim, apple, samsung bealls.

Ok, so this is what I'll do then:

First I'll try backing up a game on a Verbatim DVD-R, with RecordNow MAX.

If that doesn't work, I will try burning on a Verbatim DVD+R using an HP Burner (Only records DVD+R), using RecordNow MAX.

    I HOPE THIS WORKS!

    ***Question before I start:

So I don't waste a disc, should I try burning on a DVD+RW? I know you said it didn't work on yours, but should I still do it? I guess there's no hurt in trying, right?

  7. it wouldnt hurt to try it on a dvd+rw, i doubt it will boot after you insert the SM DVD, but if you try booting it without the SM DVD, it would probably come up with the RSOD.

Ohhh.... I've always had this question, but always forgot to ask.

I hear that when using back-up copies, it will decrease the life of the laser.

If I use Verbatim, about how long will it last? Months, Years...???

Ok, this is what happened. I backed-up my copy of Vice City on a HP DVD+RW, and it didn't load up. So you were right about that.

What I'll do now is burn Vice City on a Verbatim DVD-R. If that does not work, I will let you know.

  11. yeah, using recordable dvd's & cd's is believed to shorten the life of ps2 lasers.. you cant really say how much it decreases it by, but i doubt its very much at all..

Sorry about not posting last night.

    IT WORKED!!!!!

I popped it in after SM and it played alright, except the screens where it has to load things was kind of going slow. (Am I doing something wrong?)

Oh well... I am just happy I finally got a working copy!!!

JEEX, thanks a bunch for helping me through this whole thing, including past posts. I appreciate it alot.

  14. i'm not sure about the slow loading things. it works better on quality media.. i suggest verbatim datalife PLUS.. they sell verbatim datalife (no plus) too.. ritek is good media too.

aside from that, i'm glad you finally got it working.

i had my backups working 2 minutes after i installed my fliptop.

Also this will tell you what games will or will not work with the swapmagic disks or if you need to use the cogswap loader or other boot disks in conjuction with it
    http://www.swapmagicfix.com/

This will help you find out if its a media issue or not

Oh, I remember that post. Well I checked out that website and GTA: Vice City wasn't on there.

So what you are saying is that even my Verbatim DVD-R's are still not good quality?

And also, are you saying that the game shouldn't be loading slow?

Hmmm... I guess I can live with it, but if I could avoid it, it'd be better.

Maybe I'll wait after I use up all of my Memorex and Verbatim's to get some Verbatim Datalife Plus.

Do you use them? What kind of media do you use?

i had my backups working 2 minutes after i installed my fliptop.
    DAMN!

If your original is scratched or dirty that will also give you problems when making backups your verbatim disks are probably fine but I wouldnt consider memorex high quality disks though.

What speed do you burn at?

I ususally use apple, verbatim and ritek

GTA Vice city works great for me.

My discs that I burn are almost scratch-free. I rip at 1x and burn at 1x. But hey PS2Daddy, everyone says Memorex are no good. Hmm???

Well hey Jeex, guess what? I went to burn a movie today and looked at my Verbatim DVD-R, and it says DataLifePlus.

So what do you guys think slows down the loading screens?

I never said memorex was good media

PS2 lasers are adjusted to read the reflectivity of orginal dvd games
The reflectivity of a DVD-R is about 65-70% of a DVD at the best high end DVD-r media.

Since your laser is not adjusted to read DVD-R out of the factory that would probably cause slower load times. No to lasers are adjusted exactly the same there is a range that the lasers have to be adjusted to not one exact number.

I have a version and my load times are almost exaclty the same for my DVD-r and regular dvd games

You can try to adjust the dvd pot but if its loading fine and your games are not taking 2 mins to load I wouldnt do this.

if you do this incorrectly you might not ever be able to read a dvd-r or dvd original again

Burning with good quality media at slow speed is about the best you can do for your situation without adjusting the laser it sounds like.

    OR
You could sell your ps2 and get a new one (as long as all your regular games play fine)

Yeah, I don't want to mess with anything.

Like I said earlier... I can live with it. Well, I'll probably try another game soon. I'll let you know how that goes.
