  1. Hi,

I have a DVD converted mpg karaoke file. It's converted into a SVCD format, and it's big, around 120++MB. What i wish to do is, to convert it to another codec (maybe a better one) so that it would be around 40++MB to 60++MB. Can this be done? What kind of software should i use to achieve that result. I know that some deterioration will occur, but i hope that it is not too bad... Please help...

I'm kinda newbie here, please be gentle with me....hehehe!
    Warm Regards,
    Jacky

Virtualdub-mod will accept your mpeg and you can use it to compress both the audio and video into an avi file. Under audio and video select compression and you can select and configure your compression type. It's the bitrate that determines the file size, audio and video combined.

  3. Thanks for the reply man,

But due to some minor difficulties, i would very much appreciate it if i could convert it to mpg...Can this be done...???

And one more thing, this file was from a fren of mine. At first i couldn't play this file at all with Windows Media Player 9 Series. And then what i did was download another codec and after that, there is no more problems playing that file.

Second thing that i wish to do here is to convert that same file to a type where i don't have to download the extra codec that i've stated above so that i can play that same file in a "clean" windows media player 9 series.
    Warm Regards,

Yes, you can convert it mpeg. TMPGEnc is best for that but it will not accept mpeg2, you need to framserve from Vdub-mod. Assuming your file is an SVCD mpeg2. Not sure? Test it with avicodec.

Then I would suggest mpeg-1, WMP will play any mpeg1 file. If you're planning on burning to CD for playing on a DVD player then VCD mpeg is what you want. If it's just for a PC then any type of mpeg1 is OK.

  5. This is what i see when i check it with AVIcodec

    File : 129 MB (223 MB), duration: 0:03:24, type: MPG, 2 audio stream(s), quality: 88 %
    Video : 214 MB, 8800 Kbps, 29.970 fps, 720*480 (16:9), MPG2 = MPEG 2 (SVCD/DVD), Supported
    Audio : 0.0 B, 0 Kbps, 44100 Hz, 2 channels, 0x50 = Mpeg-1 audio Layer 1 [0xc0], Supported

As you can see, the file is big. I want to resize it smaller. Hope that the audio quality can be preserved.

As ZippyP suggested, convert your file to mpeg-1(VCD) using TMGenc. You can preserve the audio quality but your file size will only go down to around 60 MB, maybe a little less. You will see a noticeable decrease in picture quality too.
