  1. I've been searching on these forums for a simple, free way to convert DVD to AVI but haven't found it.

I've ripped my DVD into VOB files, I thought I could use VirtualDub to convert to AVI but VirtualDub doesn't even recognize VOBs.

I tried using DVD2AVI instead but when I load a VOB and SAVE AVI, the file is always 0k in size and not readable by WMP.

    What am I missing ?

My goal is to take snippets of movies and use it in Powerpoint presentations.

    Thanks in advance.

After you save the .d2v files from dvd2avi 1.76, open them in tmpgenc and save as .avi with an appropriate dv codec. Use pcm as the audio compression.

  5. tried using this and found my dvd2avi file had no audio.
tmpgenc lets me save as mpeg but not avi.

    thanks

  6. flander1,

    I'm not using tmpgenc.

    Here are my steps:

    1. Use dvd2avi to save project.
    2. Use VFAPI-Conv to convert the dvd2avi project so that vritualdub can read it.
    3. Use VirtualDub to save it to avi

    This works for me.

VirtualDub-MPEG2 can input VOBs and save as AVIs.

Your problem with DVD2AVI is that there are settings related to Dolby Digital amd MPEG Audio and you need these set to Demux All Tracks to get separate audio files.
    If in doubt, Google it.

  8. Ummm...You can do the Vdub Mpeg2 method..but wouldn't Auto Gordian Knot be better? Rip the DVD to the hard drive and encode with AutoGK. It does all the work for you and the results are amazing. Hell it will even put permanent subs on the video if you need it to. It automates DVD2AVI, VirtualDUB, and resolution settings for you, to give you the best possible results. You can even select file size...auto or manually.

I think we have probably confused the issue by offering so many different ways to achieve the same end result !

I think because you are using snippets of vido then VirtualDub-MPEG2 will help because it is very easy to specify the starting and ending frames.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I'm trying to use Gordian Knot to produce AVI for editing from DVD+R(W) recordings of my own work. There is no protection issue. The DVDs are recorded on a Philips DVDR70 in DV resolution. I can extract the files OK but cannot seem to get to an AVI that my Pinnacle Edition editor will recognise, even though I've selected uncompressed video and audio. The instructions I have are for producing DivX files. Also, I don't want to put the work on CD in parts, I want the whole AVI on hard disk.

Can anyone show me where I'm going wrong? Is there more appropriate software? This branch of the forum suggests there is.

  12. I used Auto Gordian Knot and got pretty good results, however I'm trying to convert single TV episodes from a DVD one at a time. AutoGK will instead convert all VOB files into one big AVI file. Is there a way around this?

As jimmalenko suggested, Virtualdub MPEG2 will let you work with individual VOB's and specify the range to be encoded.
