First off I would like to say hello from Indianapolis, In. I am new to the baord and looking forward to learning much here from all of you. Does anyone know how I can take a home video (VHS) to my computer and burn to DVD? I have a tape I want to keep and know it will last much longer on DVD disc. Thanks for any input to this matter in advance..

    Thanks

Welcome to the forum. First, remember to fill out you profile completely so we can see what you have, and what you need.

    1. You need a way get the VHS video into your computer. There are several ways, like a capture card, a hardware USB/fire wire encoder, or a camera with pass through. Once you see which guide affects you in the Capture section, you can see what you need, and what guide to use.

    2. To convert the captured video to a DVD format, the first step is to encode your captured video to a MPEG-2 DVD format. Several programs can do this, so check out the Convert section to find a guide and software that suits you.

    3. Now it's time to change your MPEG video to VOBs, BUPS, and IFOs, etc, files that the burner uses to make the DVD. Also this where certain programs can shrink the size of the DVD files to make them on a single disk if need be.

    4. Once the burner gets the files, the rest is downhill all the way. Remember to use a DVD±RW to begin with, as newcomers tend to make few mistakes ("coasters") when starting out, and DVD±RWs are reusable.

I cannot go into too much more detail, as you did not fill out your profile, nor do I know which program suits you, but I believe you now have the basics. Welcome again, and we will be here if you need us.

Or you can wimp out like me and buy a DVD Recorder. Capturing and then encoding takes SOME learning to say the least. Oh....I capture and convert.....but just small stuff.
A whole movie or concert?....not me.
