  1. I have tried just about everything and I'm stumped. The VHS tape I'm trying to capture isn't the greatest but I don't really see anything that looks like it would cause so much frame loss. I've tried 2 different S-VHS vcrs, using my Sima Copymaster, brand new s-video cables, cleaning the heads on the vcrs, etc. I am waiting on a Canopus ADVC-100 I ordered because I thought it may be better than my Pyro. I will return whichever unit I decide not to keep. Will a cheapie tbc like the AVT-8710 really stop the 30-40 frames I'm losing at a time?

Did you close all your unused applications and only used the capturing program while you captured? What program were you using for you capture?

  3. Vegas. Some tapes I don't drop one frame in an hour and a half and other tapes I drop more than I capture.

And did you shut down all unused applications? Did you try any other capture software, like DVIO?
    Hello.

  5. All of the other apps are closed, I diabled my internet connection, did everything I've ever read to do if you are dropping frames and I still drop like a madman. Even the tapes I captured yesterday are dropping frames like crazy. I always drop 30-34. Does this mean anything to anyone? Will a TBC corresct this?

If even all your good tapes are dropping frames, then it is not your source. If you drop only bad tapes, then you may want to go ahead and get a TBC. Have you tried any other programs like DVIO, and did you reboot before capturing?

Try capturing from a SUPER CLEAN source such as your DVD player. Not all DVD discs have copy protection and I wouldn't be surprised if the ADS PYRO A/V LINK ignored it anyways.

If you want to make sure that copy protection is not an issue then back-up a single layer DVD using DVD Decrypter ... play back the copy in your stand alone DVD player ... and capture from that.

If you still got dropped frames then you have issues beyond the source. If the capture has ZERO dropped frames (which should be the case from such a high quality source) then yes it sounds like you need a TBC device such as the one you mentioned or the DataVideo TBC-1000

  8. Yes, I rebooted too. I just tried a capture with DVIO and it helped. I dropped 96 frames out of 4000 (vs. dropping 3000). I always drop 33 or so at a time which is totally unacceptable! Is my Pyro bad? Will the Canopus be any better? Should I find a different hobby? I know it's not my hard drive. I just tried defragging and capturing at the same time and I still only drop 33 or so frames every minute or so.

I heard ADVC-100 is better at capturing poor video sources. A TBC is always a good idea, but the cheap ones will waste your time and money. It is just that when I shut down all my apps and capture, I do alright.

  10. Thanks for the help! I really don't know what to try next. I guess I'll just have to wait until Tuesday to see if the Canopus is any better.

While I am somewhat skeptical of this actually helping, you still might want to read this thread on another forum:
